most smart battery chargers have a "supply" function which is ideal for this, I use my c-tek to power up the 750 when I want to work with it inside. The main issue is you need the garmin plug so either have to unwire it from the boat or get a new plug / lead ( or make one up if you can get the plug on its own)

Yep the free map source is as good as option as homeport....so they are not making map source any longer? Plenty of blokes will have it on disk though.

    Dignity,

If you have the information in a file (csv), then you can probably use GPSU to convert it to a GPX format and then import it into home port. or you can copy and past each location, via the above method (create a way point). If you need a bit of assistance let me know.

PHil, without the map card in the card reader, you wont get access to the fishing maps. but with mapsource installed on the same PC you can access the mapsource maps..

Yes I still find Mapsource better than Homeport, though if you put some time it to it, it will do what you need it too relatively simply.

Yes, you can power your 750 via a 12v laptop power supply and a power connector for your unit. I have one it cost $45 for the garmin power cable and the laptop power supply I sourced from Trymax.

OK. I put the Homeport card in and I still only get one screen. no big deal.

    I did have a win.

I plonked some marks in Mapsource. Used my Garmin USB Prog and loaded those marks onto 2 x blank data cards ( one will be used to transfer marks into my 172C ). I then opened up Homeport........ clicked " file "... " Import " and found in my " Garmin " folder..... a map number for the " saved " mapsource chart that I just loaded new points onto. Clicked that and Bazinger !!!!! all the marks were transfered straight to Homeport and saved.

Before that, I actually plugged my 276C into the USB and " transfered to unit " those new marks from Mapsource.

It is still very easy to plot a new GPS point into Mapsource, rather than Homeport, but I am a reasonably happy chappy now.

Now, if only the fish would co-operate................

Phil, not sure what fish have to do with all of this, seems I spend more time playing with gadgets and boats. OOOOH! - now I see it is why I bought the boat in the first place.

Well not ever havinganything else other than Homeport I am happy with it. I have all my waypointsand tracks saved to base map and when I put my card in I have all data I needto see. I find entering a waypoint easy Click on the waypoint icon and if Iknow approx the area it will be in just apply it to the map, it then puts it inwith all my other waypoints, from there right button and rename it, from theirproperties and edit the waypoint numbers and done. I have entered manywaypoints then connected them as tracks selected GREEN as track colour and theyare my green zones Moreton and Hervey bay.

Once you've got your waypoints into Homeport it works OK. It's that startup process for new users that have used better systems where the real problems are found or when you come across bulk new waypoints to enter in. Is it because Homeport is an afterthought based upon Garmin's land-based GPS systems? It is slowly getting better and navigation is easy (because of the lack of features?).

    Phil,

from the view menu, select chart product, then select vpc022r-east coast (or what ever yours reads), it will open a second window with the detailed map.
