    Need some help

Took the son out this morning for his 6th Birthday. Its our 1 year fishing anniversary (got him and me our first rods last year).

We went to Bribie for some land based fishing hoping to get some whiting. Had a nice yabbie bank in mind and using blood worms did not get a bite in two hours.

The area was scattered with weed beds and I had caught Flathead there previously on SP so I thought I would have a quick wade and flick. This returned nothing again. We changed location to another yabbie bank and pumped some yabbie s and fished another couple hours for no result.

A very embarrassing day indeed especially seeing as I have been talking it up for the last week.

I haven't been whiting fishing for a while so I must need to get some basic advice again.

I have the rest of the week off for school holidays so am very keen to get back out there and get some results.

If there is someone out there that can be so kind to direct me to a location that the fish also visit than it would be greatly appreciated. Either in the forum or by private message.

    Cheers,

    Jason

Hi mate, took my nearly 5 year old to Jabiru Island on the Gold Coast on the weekend. Fished civilised hours from 10am to after lunch with worms, prawns and whitebait for whiting, bream, trevally and tailor. No keepers but kept us entertained. I always use a size 6 hook mustad aberdeen hook for my daughter.

    Cheers

Jason i will share with you what i know about whiting fishing. ive only recently moved up to caboolture from brisbane but i did alot of whiting fishing fromthe Gold Coast Brisbane and along Sandgate. First of all i will run through the gear to use. I personally like a long whippy rod 10'6 to 13'6 range as it aids in casting and acts like a big shock asborer when a whiting takes a dive and runs deep also aids in bite detection personal preference are the old snyder glas rods or butterworth rods gary howard are great to but expensive.d and a number 6 long shank mustad hook. The big sinker aids in casting and the long leader compensates for the large sinker and helps the bait look more natural. Worms are the best bait and they should be live fresh worms blood or wrigglers are fine. Now the most important thing for the whiting is to fish with the rod in the holder and not in your hands and not to strike straight away as this pulls the bait out of the whitings mouth while they are still trying to swallow the bait. i have used this technique for years and it works well.

On the downside fish around Bribie have been hard work in general i fished red beach today for two small whiting changed locations and manged some better fish but they were scarce and hard work might have been the glassed out conditions. A mate of mine specialises in nothing nut whiting fishing around sandgate to bribie island and got 1734 whiting last year all well and truely legal ere are goo numbers offish u just have to refine your tenchnique and you will get there.

It's not really the season for summer whiting (they're not called summer whiting for nothing) and the winter whiting are not usually caught from land based locations. You would do better targetting bream at this time of year. If you want to fish Bribie then fishing the edges of 'the ledge' (the crumbling mud banks that line the inside of the island) at low tide should at least give you some small bream to play with. The edge of the ledge is well exposed at Buckley's Hole and along the foreshore at Whitepatch but the bigger fish will be taken at night at this time of year. Flathead should improve in size and numbers over the next couple of months and there should also be small tailor off the beach at Skirmish Point (best fished with a high tide soon after dawn).
If you do want to try for some winter whiting then the end of the Shorncliffe pier is probably the best land based location for them.

    Thanks for the replies all.

We ended up heading out to the fishing platform on ted smout bridge. Bike ride and fish = 2 birds, 1 stone.

Using blood worms he got 10 undersize bream and whiting. Plenty of room on the platform for him to ride his bike while I caught them and then he triumphantly returned for the "reel in". He was happy with the result.

He even told mum he caught 100. He will make a fine fisherman indeed.

    Thanks again,

    Jason

Check the moon phase at the moment then read back through the week just gone's reports. It is a standard lull encountered every month. Chances are if you hit the same spot late next week it will fire again for you.
