Advice on which high speed over head reel

    Hi Members,

I am after some advice on some high speed overhead reels if anyone has at anything to do with the following reels. It is time for me to retire my TLD25.

DAIWA SALTIST STT 30H or LD40H

    OKUMA CEDROS CSD

SHIMANO TORIUM ( Reading Reports on this reel does,nt rate real well)

Re: Advice on which high speed over head reel

I love my Torsa 20. Best high speed overhead reel in my opinion. Retrieves about 110cm of line per crank backed by plenty of torque. I use mine to jig with all day but you can also livebait, bottombash, troll and even cast with so it is very very versatile. It is a powerhouse reel and Im sure many others will vouch for it. The torsa 20 will hold about 300m of 80lb braid ( more or less subject to braid selection) with room for mono backing. The model you choose will obviously depend on the primary purpose you intend to use it for but I find the torsa 20 the most versatile. Sorry I cant help with the saltist, cedros or torium. I too retired my TLDs long ago. Goodluck.

I love my torsa 20 also and will get a 16n one day.

Have a look at the Penn Fathom 25n, 6:1 ratio= over 100cm per crank and comes with carbon drag@25lb and double dogs. A cool feature is the capacity rings on the spool. All in all a better reel than both the Torium and Saltist. I will give it a good run on some Rainbow Beach reefies this week.

Penn Torque or Trinidad A in Star drags. You will need an anti reverse bearing as well as ratchet and pawl (dogs) if you intend to do any jigging.

Re: Advice on which high speed over head reel

I have the Daiwa 30H and the 20H loaded up with 65lb braid, although I haven't caught any large enough fish that are big enough to really strain the drag so I can't give any advice on the quality of the drags under a heavy load, but they feel nice and have a fast retreive rate, can cast with them as well.

However if you want a large line capacity and not going to cast, then I would also look at the high speed Tyrnos range, (amongst others) a Tyrnos 20 or 30 holds more than 2 times more line than the Saltist 30H, but you can cast with the Saltist. There are also many other good reels out there that are high speed.

So depending on what you want to do with that reel, it would dictate which one you should choose.

I'm sticking with my TLD's and will keep maintaining them until Tiagras are possible for me

If you a going down the path of reels not in this list, I would seriously consider importing an Avet JX or LX if you want more line. Avets superbly built reels.....far better built than most of the Shimano/ Daiwa etc...... you could land one here for under $320 AUS. Check them out at Charkbait...fantastic company to deal with.....service leaves many Aust retailers for dead.

Boab, i went shopping a couple of years back. I would have loved a Talica or Torsa but the budget didn't stretch that far so i went Saltist 40 lever drags, one 2 speed the other single. Both have been ok reels, they have both had some pretty decent redline abuse. I like buggering around so have done full stripdowns on them a couple of times, here is what i recon, carbontex drags same setup as an avet, good drags, main week point is a single ambasadaur style antireverse dog, these can give grief at serious drag, not a sealed drag system so may have a few corrosion issues long term, overall ok for the money, they are nice and light, i got mine from the usa. Maybe look at an avet from the US as another option, or maybe one of the FinNor baby lever drags, look good value to me.

If you are after a high speed Saltist maybe the HSH will be better. They are a higher gear ratio than the standard blue ones you asked about. The red looks nicer too! They are also going cheap for $229 on a special at a major aussie retail chain store which is a great buy.

    Hi All,
Thanks a heap for your input and imformation from your experiences. I have looked at all the reels mentioned above and the one that takes my fancy is the one that Daintreeboy mentions the DAIWA SALIST HYPER SPEED so i have just ordered a Red STTLD40HSH one as that look the goods. But it was a each way be with Avet as well but i got a good deal so i will give it a run.

Re: Advice on which high speed over head reel

A mate of mine swears by the saltist but did have a sticky drag problem after a couple of massive kingie sessions but daiwa fixed it under warranty and it hasn't been a problem since ...matt
