Check bait and cast-netting rules or net a fine
Recreational fishers in northern Queensland are reminded to brush up on the rules for cast netting and bait collection in local waterways.
Queensland Boating and Fisheries Patrol (QBFP) district officer Robert Ibell said it was illegal to use cast nets in all Queensland freshwaters.
“Freshwaters include stocked impoundments, lakes, table drains and lagoons,” he said.
“In the Ross River in Townsville, it is only legal to use cast nets below the rock wall at Aplin’s Weir.
“On-the-spot fines of $500 apply to those caught doing the wrong thing.”
Mr Ibell said fishers in the area should also be aware of the rules surrounding bait.
“The use of freshwater fish and crustaceans, such as spangled perch, redclaw, freshwater prawns and yabbies as bait (dead or alive), is prohibited outside of their natural environment or range,” he said.
“Any bait caught must comply with bag and size limits, which can be found online at www.fisheries.qld.gov.au
“No-take species are also not able to be used as bait.
“Fish that are not native to the area must not be returned to the water even as bait. This includes pest fish such as tilapia and carp, which affect native species and marine environments.”
Recreational fishers can order their free recreational fishing guide by calling 13 25 23.
If illegal fishing is witnessed or suspected, it should be reported to the Fishwatch hotline on 1800 017 116 (toll free within Queensland).
