    Hervey Bay Region

    Hi All,

I am taking my tinny to Toogoom in July and am after some advice on fishing in the area. I'm not a novice, but It's the first time taking my own boat out in salt water, so Im not sure how to attack the fishing - bait, lures, locations, water depth, target species etc.

I plan on doing some land-based fishing with the kids too, so any local tips for that would be great also.

    Thanks

    Re: Hervey Bay Region

    Hi.

Just been to toogoom to se my parents.

    Beach fishing:
Fishing on the beach at the moment will be slow as the summer whiteing are of the chew .
But the bream and flathead are around still.
Usualy pump yabys on the flats and fish the gutter on the in coming tide .
Will be some walking involved as the flats go over 1km out.

    Estuary fishing:
The toogoom estuary is very shalow at low tide.
You will notice most boats will be luanched around high tide .
The lower reaches should provide some flathead and bream.
Just left to the boat ramp is a submerged rock bare which at low tide can be trouble but
around high tide drifting over it with baits or plastics can produce some nice bream at night .
The mouth should produce some big flathead.

    Burrum heads:
Burrum is just up the road and is worth a look at .
Its a big river lots of spots.
Winter whiting are on the chew and if you head to burrum look straight out to the north towards northgate
and you usualy se a few boats fishing.

Thanks for the tips Nathan. Very helpful

Any chance of catching snapper and other larger species in The tinnie out in the bay?

    Re: Hervey Bay Region

On a nice day you can head out towards 8 mile reef .
Was out there the other day and there was a few tinnys.
I wouldnt head out here if your boat was smaller then 4.2 mt as it gets rough when wind picks up .
I would tow boat to heavey bay and launch at urangan boat ramp and head out to the inner reefs and if the whether picks up you can shelter behind
    woody island.
Could pick up a jew fish in the deeper parts of burrum river around the mouth.

Sounds like the more shelterded areas are the go as i only have a smaller boat.
Hopefully the weather is kind and doesn't get too windy out there.
Will have to try the Burrum river by the sound of it as we were hoping to catch some jew and larger type of fish.

    Re: Hervey Bay Region

    Hi
Bill and I spent a week up there and found it great. We took the boat into hervey and went to the Arti and beyond. Toogoom itself is great at high tide but if fishing at low around there you will need to walk alot to get out to the water. Have a look at Fishin tales and they have a load of info.

Just out of interest are you renting a house. We did and found it awesome. Water right at the back door and pretty cheap as well. Have you been there before? I have many pics around Toogoom to give you an idea if you need.

they did up one of the ramps a while back ( can't remember its name) and we saw lots of smaller tinnies not far offshore doing the whiting thing.

    good luck

    Hi
Just thought I would add these pics anyway.
first is boat ramp at high tide.
looking back along channel to boat ramp.
    House we stayed in.
looking out at high tide along channel.
Main channel out at high tide.

channel is shallow at low tide but saw a few coming in. just need to follow markers and be careful. Hope this helps a little

    Hi Ronnie,
Those pics look great we have not been there before,So its good to see what it looks like. We are renting a house, backing onto the beach. looking forward to getting away from the cold and hopefully getting amoungst some good fish. Looks like we have to be carful on low tide with our navigating.

    Re: Hervey Bay Region

    Hi
Low tide is a killer i reckon if you don't know the area up there. We didn't attempt our boat at Toogoom - would have to launch at high and I reckon come in at high. We just fished from the back of the house on high tide and spent alot of time driving around the area for fishing spots. Go to Burrum and have a look see- you should be right there in a tinny and even if you head out front if it is calm you should be good.

The tide rises and falls much more up there-- this you will see when you are there.. Bill and i reckoned a four wheel motor bike would of been the go to get to the water at low. the second pic is a good place to fish. If you have kids they can play around while you do abit of fishing.

Hope you have a great time-- just do abit of exploring while you are there. We have been up there a few times and really enjoyed it and must say Toogoom is great for cheap accommodation.

Have fun and give us a report.

    Thanks Ronnie
Should be a good spot for the kids just hope warm enough for them to have a paddle.
We certainly plan to have a good look around esp in the boat. Also fraser island.
Will give a report when we get there and hopefully catch a few.
