Thread: A really good dose of Herpes !!!

A really good dose of Herpes !!!

Apparently there is now a specific Herpes Virus, Koi Herpes, that only affects carp.

Scientists researching this are hoping they can eliminate up to 90% of the carp populations in Australian waterways.

There was research into a genetic solution that would kill 100% of the carp but funding was removed to save money

Anyone who fishes in Australian fresh water or who cares about our ecosystems should be really happy about the possibility offered from this research, one less feral pest wrecking our country.

It was a kiss from Rex Hunt that gave it to them ;-)

This is great, lets let it go or play around with it until it escapes, and then let it mutate for a couple of species or so then flare up when it likes and wipe out what ever species it mutates to.

Good news as long as there has been as much research done to prove this will not affect our natives.

These biological control methods don't fill me with confidence.

Are all the rabbits gone? Prickly pear mostly gone. It seems that you end up with a reduced population of resistant strains. So it's good for a while but long term youve introduced another disease or species with unpredictable results. The cane toads love it here....

I reckon we don't know enough about ecosystems yet to be trying these experiments.
