Scroll down to the DF150 for specs
And from that link you can see the 150 and 175 are the same 2.8L 4 cylinder motor, except the 175 has variable valve timing and the 150 does not. In this test - on the same hull, the 175 returns similar figures to the Opti 150, so I conclude the 150 would not perform as well as an Opti.

It would, however, be expected to significantly outperform the 140, just because it has 2.8L while the 140 is only 2L.
I conclude the Merc 150 4 stroke would likely be a better option, than even the 175. My Opti is for sale in the classified section, so I can get a Merc 150.
Hey Ozynorts,
Mate I would be looking at your hull design and shape, deadrise, beam width etc first up as to what size motor you will need to get decent performance. Some hull designs need more HP and torque to get them on the plain and to get reasonable speeds when loaded. Just the same as some hulls will drop of the plane speed wise earlier and get onto the plain easier than others carrying the same load due to their hull shape. I have a 6mt full alloy plate longboat that gets good speed and load carrying abilty and it is pushed along with only a 70 HP yamaha 4 stoke as I said Look at your hull shape and design first that should dictate what you need to get what you think is satisfactory and could save you a lot of extra money for something that isn't really required.

Thanks Gary,
I am lucky in that I have been able to track down the designer/builder and If I do go ahead with this boat I will be getting in his ear about the points you raised. This is a little of what he had to say about the hull. Dead-rise is 18Deg at the transom note the bottom has a small convex curve out so the angle is from the Centre line to the chine.

It has been said before, the 140 and the 150 Suzukis are two completely different engine "families" there is realy no comparison, however, if there is 5 grand difference (which seems an awful lot) then it would be a very difficult decision for sure, the 140 is a pretty "small" 140, where the 150 is quite a big capacity engine, it's going to be a big headache for you no doubt, also as mentioned, the 150 Merc seems to be great value at the moment, and they look pretty good too.
yeah the new Merc 150 is a 3ltr 4 cylinder so a big bore like the 150/175 Zukes (2.8ltr) and it will be your cheapets option in that league but unproven atm. if its true 6m plate boat then i reckon the DF140 will be a bit under done. As others have said there is no comparison between the 140 and 150 Zuke only 10hp difference yes but the torque is ina totoally different league !!
Even though the new Merc is untested, I kind of think they would be from a known good engine from the US, where Merc almost rules the waves in big engines, not that 150HP is big these days.
we had a 140 suzuki on a 6.2m light glass boat and it was adequate but we always wished we had the 150 with more cubes and torque. spend the $5k, you won't regret it.
the 140 is a revolutionary motor and it's the benchmark powerplant for repowering older 5.2-5.8m hulls that like the lighter transom weight of the older 2 stroke v6's. but it's horses for courses, at 6m you need more than the 140. the reason the 175 has the variable valve timing is simply to allow it to comfortably rev harder, more rpm = more bangs = more power, have a look at the operating rev range of the 150 opposed to the 175. obviously there'd be some tuning differences but the main difference will be the rev range.
