unpleasant fumes from the old johnson

i have a 96 johnson 70hp with the vro still running
i bought the boat at xmas just gone and it came 6 4l gulf western branded oil

the last two trips trolling ive had the wind up behind me and normally im fine but i got quite sick from the smell of the fumes

is it possible either its the oil itself (do they have different smells) or the vro over oiling ?
tbh it uses bugger all oil so i doubt its over oiling.
it blows a bit of smoke on start up but nothing id call excessive

most of my past engines have been yamahas and i ran the yamalube oil and even just out of the bottle its not as pungent as this gwr stuff

Hi stevej i too have a johno 70hp and have used the gulf western oil too, i know my motor was oiling up a little and had a funny smell to it as well..
i did find with the gulf western oil i had probs at low revs would just cut out all the time, so that is when i went from 100ml per 5 lt to 90-95ml of oil to 5 lts fuel and it was so much better, started better, run so much better and the smell was a lot less also
i have now gone back to the castrol oil now so will find out when the waether is better to go out...

I think you should get rid of that oil Steve, I can pick it up from you anywhere in Sydney.

Oil doesnt last forever. Especially the cheap stuff. You have no control over how old it was b4 you purchased the rig.
Hoik it somewhere appropriate i reckon. Get a good brand.

the stuff was new so not a age issue
picked up some yamalube oil today

can i mix the stuff, ie 90% drain the res then top up so i dont have to bleed the system, ?

Can actually be the fuel smell as well. Some fuels these days are giving very odd smells so consider changing sevos and see if it makes a difference.

Even with a 4 stroke we travel at a angle to the wind so we dont get the fume around us all the time.

You can't dillute or change the mix with VRO.

Double check you are using the corect amount of oil by makring the resovior and then topping up tank so ypu know it is getting the right mix.

I dont see this to be a prob at all if you drain it 90% it will be used up quick anyway, just add the new oil slow, try to not stir it up to much..

i pre mix all my fuel now so that way i know what i have got and i know how much oil i have in the tank.. but that is just what i do..
as for what Cormorant has said i find that as well with the fuel from some servo's....

the best but most expensive and less smoke producing oil to buy is the Etec oil

I have used Merc Quicksilver oil for their Optimax for my last 2 motors (being Yamaha) and before it a Merc 2 stroke carb - expensive, but after warm up virtually no smoke and smell. Very good gear and keeps the motor running nicely and plugs clean.

Only use the XD-50 not the XD-100.

The 100 is not suitable as a TCW-3 oil however the 50 is.

Whilst expensive I have used the 50 to great effect on my old 3 clyinder yamaha 50, smoother and bugger all smoke and thats on a pre-mix 50-1 engine. Yamalube and penrite were also good but the 50 probably had under half as much smoke.

The sooner they put the sausage & onion flavour in tcw3 the better.
