1100kg would be about the right build weight Spiro as opposed to the "odd" thinking these days that much heavier makes a better boat.

That weight figure fits in well when you consider other boats. Say for example a Savage Marlin/Bluefin at around 1000kg. Bertram 20 about the same. Bertram 25 flybridge (bare) around 1700kg. The original formula could have probably been maybe 100kg heavier?

I will never understand the overbuilding of boats as it means less performance and more hp required to make it go. Overweight is all bad IMO.

You need to ride in both to appreciate the differences particularly in short sharp chop. 1100kg for a 233 is way too light IMO, especially when you consider how the bulk of these boats are used, be they owned by amateur or professional fishermen.

Whilst I agree excessive weight can be a real problem, I don't think any of the current 233's builds fit in to that category. Increased build weights (up to 30% and more) is noted across the majority of boat manufacturers including those that we refer to as production boat builders. That in itself tells speaks volumes about the benefits that can and are realised through heavier, yet not excessively heavy, builds.

Displacement is about volume, not weight.

I should have clarified my earlier remarks. Weight that is proportional to length and beam is fine. Overweight such as the talk elsewhere of 1800kg Formulas is simply madness.

I don't agree, and I'm sure many others wouldn't either.

Forget the 233 for a minute. We know production boat manufacturers have increased weights by up to 30% and more. It costs them more (much more) to build in this extra weight. Why would they do it if they didn't believe it provides advantages.

Sure not all 233's are podded, but the vast majority of EC and Cam Strachan 233's are.

also note they measure the new hulls including the bow sprit,park it side by side to the 233 and there would be inches in it

Theoretically yes but the volume measurements between it and the new 760 Haines are likely quite different.


I simply find it somewhat wasteful the enormous hp needed/fitted to push these overpowered craft. If it is simply all about "show" and it most likely is then the excessiveness is understand. To each there own I guess.

And given the Haines 19 I sold years ago with a 1986 model 200hp Merc on a stupid Clearwater bracket could achieve 103km/h on the GPS it seems a bit odd but understandable that these overpowered boats aren't achieving great speed figures. Not that going fast on water is important. Not to me anyway.

I'm running an original and light weight 565L, have it powered by a 2.5lt 200hp EFI merc also sitting on a 'stupid' clearwater set back bracket and can only achieve 88-91km/h at max outboard rated rpm.

I'm sorry Nicholas but I find it very difficult to believe that a much heavier and slightly longer V19 with a 2 or 2.4lt 200hp carb outboard could achieve any where near 103km/h.

They were the figures Spiro, no reason to lie about it.

Actually, I was talking to Howard before and he supplied a pod which went onto an original 565L which then had a carby 200 Yammy fitted and that boat exceeds 100km/h also.

In all seriousness I would be double checking your serial number to ensure you definitely have a 200 and weren't dudded when you bought it (200 cowl on a smaller V6). I don't know if you bought it new or s/hand.

You should be achieving higher speeds than you currently get. Given the other 565L gets higher than 100km/h you should too.

Plenty of worse boats and plenty of better boats. They are a pig of a boat at anchor unless bridled. Any boat if too heavy becomes a wallowing pig also.

In any case I'm not really interested in arguing about it. You have your opinion and I have mine and that's that! (we call that mature and respectful)
