It apeards your deck has had some modification at the transom, but looking at the hull and deck join on either the port of startboard side, it's pretty clear it's a shoebox arrangement.
As you have been able to confirm your boat is a HH233, we can now rule out the hull/deck join as being a potential indicator of whether a 233 being viewed is a Haines Hunter or a Formula Thunderbird ie at least beyond a certain year.
hey benny its still the original gunnel extrusion as i have never tried to remove it, only the stern section has been left off. and yes it was a yellow gelcoat deck and always white gelcoat hull with original red stripes back then. blue rego and aussie flag on the sides. this is my eight engine/major re-fit i have done to galaxy since i was born and my dad did one re-furb before that.
cheers jimmy
yes mal seven engines and medium structural alterations since 1972 and the latest one being the grand finnally. the eighth one and the biggest of all time. i have posted pictures of the last four re-fits over the years but none like the latest.
it is the one that broke me, just watch the video and see the insane amount of time spent spent on the latest re-fit. Lol
Yeah I did watch the video, it might as well been a new boat build, that's a massive amount of dedication. Couldn't help thinking it must owe you a fortune, but even if you had been buying a new rig and selling it after every say, 5 to 10 years, you would still burn a heap of cash.
What makes the rebuilds/repowers more interesting is the long family involvement, and clearly what is a classic hull.
I also like to add new alloy additions to the old GRP hulls.
Well did some poking around on the boat yesterday to find main stringers and transom totally rotted out. Some bright spark drilled 20 mm holes in stringers in the bilge and cut through the transom for a vent without resealing them. So it's all coming out. Have been debating between epoxy and vinyl ester. Captain what fillers and adhesives to you use with VE , cheers
hi Simon we used 80kg foam in the entire hull so no adhesives required, no more dirty rotting plywood in my boat anymore. and fillers were microballoons from memory, im electing to forget the technical names for some of the products because of the costs. LOL
Hello all,
Below is a picture of my 233. The previous owner striped and removed the cabin in a bid to rebuild the boat as a express with outboard power.
He gave up on the build after he worked out the total cost and man hour's it would take to finish.
He also told me that the boat was custom built by HH for the original owner, anybody see anything like this before ?
As I was removing the cap today, I could see the remnants of the cabin / gunnels / cap looks to be all one piece, it just doesn't look like they built the cabin on top of the standard runabout cap.

hi con thanks for the picture, that's a very interesting top deck, Ive never seen one that shape, i hope some of the haines gurus on here can help with this one. im interested in there feedback.
cheers Jim
Thanks Captain, VE looks like the choice.
Simon656,
I have an account with FGI ( Nuplex ), so I'll be using Divincell and Klegecell as core materials, and vinyl ester resin throughout the rebuild. but once I get to the fairing and painting process I'll swap to epoxy based materials.
Other core materials to consider would be Coosa and Airex.
However if your choice of core is plywood, then I would only use epoxy, hope that helps.
Regards Con
PS: My hull will be turned into a centre console.
