    Little help please

Almost finished my very first rod from start to finish (previous ones were rebuilds and only did the wrapping) when I find the drying motor on my lathe I bought is caput.
Went to mudhole to find two options below, a 30 to 36 rpm and a 9 to 11 one. The one I had is an RDM-1 36 RPM Pacbay one if this helps. I was thinking the 9 to 11 one but have never coated before so need all the help I can get.
Any tips on coating would be good too, I hear I have to heat the stuff below applying? Will a lighter do for getting rid of bubbles?

Stuart you need to hold a rod building weekend up in Cairns.

I have the Pac bay wrapper/dryer (mudhole catalogue PBWD UPC )which has the 11rpm dryer and does good finishing on my rods.As far as the heating the the finish It only needs some heat if you hace bubbles and that is after application. If you search on the net you will see this explained using a methylated spirit torch.

    Re: Little help please

I will be on the first plane if you will pay for my ticket and put plenty of beer in the fridge.
A cheap coating drier is to use a windo whipper, or even better a geared motor thats used on kebab machines.
They have so much torque they would twist your arm out of its socket.
I have one here if you want it, I would let t go to a good home for $70, plug and play as they say.
I would have to check, but I think its around 18rpm. I used this for several years before building large drying racks.
To many RPM will result in the epoxy creeping up the guide feet and it wont flow evenlyaround the guide feet either.
I like around 12 to 16rpm, the new electric motor and gearbox Im about to fit gives me an rpm range from 8 to 50rpm.
Dont heat your epoxy efore applying, thats if you live in the tropics, if you live in the deep South then yes.
DONT ever use a lighter to flame your coating. The gas is dirty and will leave soot on your new rod. Have fun trying to get that crap out. Use the gas you fill the barbie gas bottle with. You dont want a yellow flame despit it being cooler, it also means the gas isnt beeing burnt completly. You want asmall blue flame with just a hint of yellow at the tip of the flame.

daintree have a look at these http://www.mudhole.com/Shop-Our-Cata...tor-Included,i have one and they work sweet
they are available in 220v as well
Having the one on the lathe is a pain in the arse imo as you cant bind a rod while finishing another.
the best way to remove bubbles is to use a alcohol flame, they burn clean and the heat is not as intense as a gas burner, there is a couple of different types . I have a standard burner and i just got the squeeze type torch ( yesterday ) it works good as well
Do not heat your epoxy up here mate ,you loose too much working time as it makes it set to fast
also watch the humidity in summer , it will make your finish go milky if it is too humid

    Re: Little help please

I just use a hair dryer to heat the epoxy to help to remove air bubbles and to help flow and level it. Simple and clean.

    Re: Little help please

You want to be carfull using a hair dryer because th eheat generated can be quit hot. Its not the heat that gets rid of bubbles but the carbon monoxide. The heat also helps with flow as you have said. The main problam with hair dryers is they can soften the resin in the blanks fibre. When I worked for Angler rods thats what they used, and yes we has blanks that would twist when the resin in the cloth softened.

not to mention dust , hair and other airborne crap that could be blown onto your nice shiny finish.

    Re: Little help please

I use a bosch hot air gun digital programable 0-600 degrees best thing since sliced bread especially on 12ft rebuilds.

    Re: Little help please

I use a Needle Flame Alcohol Torch for removing air bubbles.

    http://www.acidrod.com/tools_thread_fiinish.html

    scroll down to find it.

I use Metho as a fuel. By squeezing the bottle, the flame point narrows to a very fine point to individually hit the bubbles.

I use a Microwave motor for my rod dryer.
