I think that Chas and Clarry are on the money. I have used a Sol for ages and never had that problem. Check which way you open your bail arm and do so away from the rod. Re the net issue I switched to a good old Wilson big-ish Snapper net with about a 5-6 foot handle about a year ago and gave my enviro style net away and have not looked back. Enviro style was always too slow through the water for my liking and the new one nails them every time, the bigger ones are no issue and rarely ever have drama's getting them out or hurting them in any way.
