    nannygai - CONGRATULATIONS!!
    Reckon you might be right

I didn't want to spear it back into the water just incase it was a wahoo rather than a spaniard

If I stretched it I could perhaps make it into a flame snapper
    flamesnapper.JPG

But that might be stretching it a bit too much

Yes I concede the catch is nothing spectacular, but the trip was more about technique and tackle and gear and I am happy with the fishing tackle and rig and method, but have to work on sounder transducer and settings and the fishing locations - work in progress and even a humble nannygai is edible - when I first caught it I thought stuff I hope I do better and moved

It did get me honours in the newbie stakes

    Congratulation trav on success
    thumbs up
I would like to advice you next time stay on bottom with sinker
every drop should bring you two fish or one, minus sinker.
The best is if you get drift from shallow to deep and you keep holding on bottom
but losing the gear is minimum
If sounder can not reach as soon soon as you get bait hit Quick save on you GPS and work area around the mark

Trev if you want shortest trip to the shelf go to the tweed, there are good fish to be had out there.
Look for the area called the kink.

    Hi Timbo,

I don't have that mark The Kink and can't find it I do have Tweed Canyons
    Tweed.JPG
And I also have Danger Point Canyon

These above are readily available online searching.

I cannot find The Kink but it is reasonably commonly spoken of.

Would appreciate that mark if someone would share - promise not to advertise it

On your top photo it is the contour line just above the writing ( TWEED CANYONS) see the kink.
But here is the mark for you anyway

Try from the kink to the canyons mark you have.

Cairns area - I have some pool cue style blanks that would suit this style of fishing, easily handle 100lb line and big sinkers, $10 each. PM me if interested.

I will take it if it can be safely sent.

If I pay freight and you tape it to a piece of wood - fence paling or pine wall stud then they shouldn't break it?

Yes I expect some cost for that too.
    Cheers
