Crunchy I am still plugging along at this and I really have had no choice about the speed I could go personally .

Yesterday I received some more tackle from Deepdropcommercial - fantastic place to get gear from for this fishing - go to BCF and get 6 lumo beads for $6 or go to deep drop and get 500 for about $40 - so I got from them some trace protector, lumo beads, lumo tube, and one of their lights - I now have three different types of lights and all the gear ready to make up some traces along with a spare spool of 150lb line.

I am going to make some sinkers inside some poly pipe using some big bolts, nails, lead and concrete to fill the gaps - recycling

Talking to Jo at deepdropcommercial the fish are best when the currents subside more towards Autumn and then migrate, but if conditions allow I will be out there before then - real soon. Jo did send me a few pics of a customer who bought an electric hooker reel from him and the couple of nice ooglies he got a few weeks back from Noosa Canyons just off the back of Hards - pretty much where the guys go marlin trolling there - stands out obvious on the sounder maps. If the current is showing too strong up this way I can always tow to GC and go out to Jim's Mountain or that other spot Riv only 55km out.

I start putting the boat back together today with trim-tabs, fuel tank, transducers etc.

Anyway Santa brings me the reel next week and the boat should be good then too.

I have had real issues getting the rod from US - they have been promising me the rod every two weeks for three months now, but if they are true to their word for once then it should be in transit now.

Due to the motor on the boat not starting in pretrip test I did not manage the 3.30am trip but did get away at 10.30am with new fuel line and bulb - the road trip to Mooloolaba took a mere 2 hours (normally one hour trip) - predawn or never in holiday times from now on.

Set sail at 12.30 and got to first drop off Noosa at 3pm - map showed 88km from spot to just off beach - so I am saying 90km from ramp.

First drop in 300m coming up to 250m - got bites straight away and this thing came up - it's orange and I think it is edible

Where did we fish exactly - well we tried these locations and the temperature at the back of Hards was 28.4 deg and back of Barwon Banks was 29 deg and deep blue and clear. The current on the reefs was next to nothing but the shelf being another 10 to 15km East of Hards and 30 to 35km East of Barwon Banks had a pretty strong current and with chute out travelling 4.5 to 6km was not a drift option.

We did about 20 drops all up and drifted at about 2kph to keep up with the drift rate of the 2kg sinker near at the bottom.
Method we used was to drop to bottom then lift a few metres and every 60 seconds repeat this to keep close to the bottom - it worked well. We did not lose a sinker to the bottom and we did stay close to some reasonably rough bottom that even left cuts in the jinkai trace to the sinker. We did try first up with 20lb braid to sinker and it broke too easy losing that sinker boatside, so we upped this to 40lb jinkai trace.
The rigs we used has a sinker from steel washers inside a 50mm poly tube filled with grout and zip tie drilled into the end cap, the mainline 400lb jinkai and droppers 300lb jinkai with protector tube and lumo tube the swivels to droppers having beads above and below this the rig - hooks used being 16/0 circle hooks.

I had along three different lights one crystal light that starts when it gets wet and the other two from deepdropcommercial with the shark clip and KF Krystal fishing - the Krystal fishing one has a sonic noise and although a mate reckoned it would implode at 300m it came back flashing and squealing from 600m depth.

I started fishing at top end off Noosa and Hards and worked my way South to the back of Barwon Banks.
I reckon I did over 190km for 3/4 of a 240 litre tank of fuel.
Bait usage was minimal.
The depth sounder was only effective to 350m then no good - guess I need to get the 1kW transducer.
The boat went well - which is one thing I was anxious to find out after it's major rebuild to transom.

Watching this thing retrieve time an again from up to 700m of line out with a 2kg weight was impressive and for sure you guys going manual, make sure you see fish on the bottom before you drop.
I would like to try fishing in more benign conditions where the current is not a problem and ideally the boat does not have to motor to keep with the rig 300 to 600m below.
The rod used is just a 37kg jig stick - awaiting the US delivery of a bent butt rod for some months now - but this rod served the purpose well - not sure how good with a big ooglie though - just go easy I suppose.
This was a toe in the water trip and although the conditions were not ideal I was very happy with the tackle, gear and method for future outings.

Sounds like a plan Bill.

By all accounts mate you are becoming a marlin guru on this forum - well done on the marlin and hoos. I am so much in mixed minds about the trolling of late with some braining it and others trolling for very long hours to see nothing. Got to admit though the best tip I ever heard was if you don't even see baitfish don't waste your time trolling.

Now for the deep stuff I will PM you when I give it another shot - it will be when the current abates and I am keen to do less sea miles and more road miles so will more likely go to the GC and try there. I am yet to go out from there.

Oh and the boat went well.
