Wow, this is what I like to see, people thinking and getting excited.........

    They should work a treat.
    Follow instructions for joy
    1 go
2 add bait and a BL....Y big weight
    3 chuck it down
4 pull it up and sing the chant, just keep winding, just keep winding
4 swear to never do it again!

    Re: Ooglies of the deep.

Oh yeh, did a bit of preventative maintenence last week, you know, hole saw a hole into the floor to see all is well.......
Well how about slime, water muck and mildew

Well the floor is 1/2 up and more going soon.

This is all part of fishing wide, your boat must be good. Check and recheck. May 2012 saw me put on 75 engine hours in 3 trips, half wear out the drive shaft splines on a new shaft, crack the 320 fuel tank, and now find the underfloor like a sewer. No offence to any plumbers reading this.

But that is wide fishing. the boat must be checked and rechecked... have I already mentioned this?

Geez when you get out there its good though

Hope you others catch one. I'm out for a few weeks at least.

    Re: Ooglies of the deep.

    Hi guys,
We went out of Ballina yesterday.
Round trip of approximately 60 nautical miles and fished marks between 800 feet and 1200 feet.
Spent all day in a once productive area and only got 2 Nannygai and a great stack of Green eye sharks. Its not much fun hauling big weights out of 1200 feet with a normal overhead and finding a couple of sharks attached, well it was , until we spotted the sharks on the end
The captain had an electric reel and his thumb was starting to cramp up from pressing the buttons, we were starting to feel sorry for him but we snapped out of it fairly quickly
We went back in a bit shallower and got a few fish, kingies etc.

We had heard that catches of deep sea fish are dropping and with a very slow growth rate its probably taking a bit of a toll on the cod etc.
Getting quite busy with boat traffic out there .

Perfect conditions and we had a great day out but little reward for our efforts.

I guess in a way, the rec fishos that now target the deepwater species must be taking a toll on them, going back only a few years, it was strictly a pro only domain, and they used lines only, but nowdays, everyone has a decent boat, all sorts of electronics and so on, and can find and fish thes places all the time (well, in my opinion) In my area, there was only 2 or 3 pros that ever drop lined the shelf, but now there is about 10-15 boats doing it almost every suitable day, so who knows hey?

    Re: Ooglies of the deep.

Dont be too worried about the rec toll. Green eyes are pretty good disincentive and at about 1 1/2 hours per drop, its still easy too home home with nothing.
I spoke to the Mures boys in tassie. they have a large chunk of the quota and fish in a range from mid NSW under tassie and around to the otherside ... of WA.

I heard of one of their boats carrying 15,000 hooks. not sure if that is right but even if it was 1500 it would still be scary.

No matter its lots of effort to fish xos wide and more about the adventure. I think the resource is pretty safe.

Once 1770 is out of the way, team Beeracudda will be teaming up with Muddy Toes and heading offshore chasing these beasts.

Team Me is heading out again in October and may have vertico in tow. Also in talks with muddy on when he is home may just be an adventure.

    Re: Ooglies of the deep.

I just finish reading all post and every page.
From the date this post start I had chance to go few times to chase this fish and, we did well every time we go out deep .
Next time I go I will try get some photos .
Blue eye and Bass Grouper chew very good but if I could chose Blue eye or Snapper I will eat Snapper before any time
Prepare your self to lose lots of gear and deep drop gear is not cheap .
hooks, lights, sinkers, braid , leaders, rod holders etc etc

This fish are big and they pull like hell ,and u never know what is at the end of your line .You just hope it is blue eye or cod
Few times I was like to brake away as I did't want to see that monster in my boat, and some fish you pull out they look like from Jurassic park .

    Tony,
For a deep drop, I mostly fish from Tweed Heads, Gold Coast and off from Cape Moreton but it depends on the weather...
if it`s windy here, I`ll go down south.
I`m still new to deep drops...the guys who know about that deep drop stuff are 'Thunderbird' and 'Finding Time.'

    Cheers!

I got this last week - so green light should be a good choice as confirmed by others, but also it has some kinda sonic thingy in it to attract the fish too and the case is lumo - looks worth a try and not too expensive. It's 175mm long.

Also I am in for an operation tomorrow and reckon liver will take some months to come completely good so I have chickened out of the manual winding caper and bought one of these Miya Epoch Command Reels - So I guess I am not in favour with the devout winders.

I don't have a transducer better than the standard Lowrance HDS unit but have always seen the bottom with it so far - but haven't tried deep exploring with it beyond a few hundred metres - so will see how that goes. I have read the pros use 3kW units to find the clouds of small food the fish are after and fish where this meets the seabed. I expect my unit will see the floor but at depth could struggle to see the fish but to see the bait this needs a bigger unit than a 1kW most likely. With a bag limit of 5 fish I do not see any limitations with my set up as a problem at this stage but will upgrade transducer in time as need arises and once SWMBO gets over the shock of reel cost. I will do the tuning tips to get the best I can with it such as ping speed and gain and see if this helps.

I also got a bent-butt rod from the US for $179 + $62 freight which retails here for $360 best price and $450 std price plus postage - Daiwa Dendoh or something.

I am not interested in pillage and plunder but certainly interested in putting some nice eating fish in the freezer for my family - the little lady could eat fish every day and I don't get out there much.

Anyway I am still keen to get out once my tummy comes good.

Lucas - you should be about ready to give it another go?
Muddy has gone quiet on this deepsea stuff but done well elsewhere.
Seems top end of Fraser is the magnet ATM.

Anyone been deep dropping recently and done any good??

I have a trip planned with Marty in November when I get home. Don't think we are going that far. December may be my next try and boat is sorted and ready to go again. If Didn't work so many weeks away I would have been out already.

I just had a look and the shelf is only about 9 NM off the 4 mile crossing on Breaksea Spit. It gets very deep very quicly after that

Horse that makes it a worthwhile option for a smaller boat as it is a not to far tow and a safer offshore distance.

If I towed up to Fraser I reckon I will use less fuel going 60-70km off Scarby

Definitely though for me I won't be going anywhere until today's butchering fixes itself and I am in no hurry to push a rod butt anywhere near that belly button - the surgeon broke a needle off inside then did this getting it back out

    butchered.JPG

    Yes it does hurt!

And they did find a pack of stones blocking a duct - explains a lot of sensations past month

Rest assured I will with very clear conscience stand alongside an electric.
    Cheers
