    Re: SEQ Snapper Shortage

I greatly appreciate detailed reports, especially when they post what gear they're using.

Before coming here I wouldn't have had a clue on what rig to use to even catch a snapper, but it's posts like OP's that gives me the information I need.

Thank you very much for the report, It's massively appreciated :-)

Awesome report and thanks for taking the time to post it up. Snapper do love those bucktails- I got a 5kg model just off Bustard head last year on one. I thought he was a trevally, he went so hard! Strange capture

Calcium deficiency...doubt it given snappers style of feeding....just a gltch in genetic 'type' or the result of repaired damage.

    Good fishin!! cheers

FNQCairns here is a response from someone who obviously works in fisheries or studying fishes

Quote from: Daryl McPhee on Mon 14 May 17:34 2012

"In terms of the snapper bump overall, the condition is called hyperostosis and it occurs to varying degrees in at least 80 marine fish from around the world. Bone sites that are affected vary between species but are generally consistent within a species. I’ve previously attached some x-rays from a couple of species but I can’t for the life of me find them. Because of the location(s) that are affected on the snapper it is more prominent and well known than it is in other species. Nonetheless, it is the same condition as occurs in other fish.

It is predominantly fish from tropical and subtropical waters that are affected from varying environments. It is the presence of active cells which makes the affected bone continue to grow. If I had to implicate causes it would be a combination of regional environmental factors (temperature and calcium levels) that interact with inheritable characteristics of the population itself.

In the case of the snapper in the photo, it is probably just another variation of hyperostosis – albeit an extreme one. Alternatively it may be a different morphological/developmental issue which is more prominent in yellowfin bream called “saddleback syndrome”. It is known to occur in other Sparids including snapper. This is a focus of research in SEQ at the moment."

Sheds a bit of light on it for everyone I hope

FisHard, surprisingly enough the snapper do come in around 1770 in winter on the closer reefs and rubble areas, we have some spots east of round hill where you catch snapper as well as some big models that have been caught out on the shelf in 100-120m of water

Thanks for all the kind words, greatly appreciated

snap dog, you can jig them for kingys and other pelagics or add a pilly or fresh bait for snapper frenzy action

    Re: SEQ Snapper Shortage

Deformity in last snapper pic definitely looks like saddleback, given the fish is missing dorsal spines. X-ray would be interesting on that one.
