Ok...no blood and guts involved it was a "near miss" thankfully , but I was reaching for the mobile phone expecting to be calling the ambulance, as we were motoring over to try to help...but first the fishing
We had a few hours on the Pine this morning. Beautiful day, pretty busy on the water though. We started a bit before sunrise and saw some of the meteors Funchy was talking about in his thread yesterday (thanks for the heads up Funchy...only saw a few but they were spectacular).
Fished our usual spot from the bottom of the tide. No action until the sun was up and then 6am on the dot, bang ZZZZZZZZZZ, and I was onto a nice flatty on 4lb line and leader, it wasn't huge (55cm) but definitely wasn't keen on joining us aboard the boat so lots of zzzzzz every time it came near the boat, eventually it got close enough for Trace to net it...cheers all round.
Then it went quiet for ages (couple of littlies including an 8cm herring...a PB for Trace on the soft plastics ) so we eventually moved to a small gutter you can only access near the top of the tide. Trace got onto a nice lizzard there...about 48cm, our smallest keeper for the day, then not long after another at 50cm, nice !
We moved back to the flats and Trace had no sooner cast than she was smashed with a big hit and run, the fight was brief, she got a lovely looking tarpon to the side of the boat a couple of times but it was only lipped and it spat the hook. Thankfully not until after we had seen it up close. If you average our estimates of its length you'd get 75cm (I guessed 25 . Only joking I think 50cm Trace thinks 60. Trace was very frustrated to have lost that one, it was a PB she wanted!
Next cast I was onto a nice 50cm flatty, all good and into the boat with no drama.
The final fishing for the day was up the South Pine where we met up with Shawn, Trudy and Harley (Shawn's beautiful and very old dog). Shawn suggested a spot where he had seen some flatty lies so we headed off and 10 minutes later with a bit of zzzzz and a bit of fun another 51.5cm flatty on the 4lb line and leader -they are great fun on the lighter line).
Heading back along the Southpine towards the Pine we rounded a bend and in the distance there were 3 people in the water, with a small dingy doing donuts at what looked like full throttle right beside them and no one aboard. One of the young blokes kept swimming in to try to grab the boat
All I could think was "Oh sh!t here we go...this is going to end badly" so we headed towards them to try to assist and frankly to suggest (loudly) that they just get out of the way, (people overboard and props just don't mix IMO) but amazinglly on his 3rd go the guy managed to get hold of the boat and get aboard. Crazy stuff, cannot imagine how all 3 of them ended up over board in the first place...I think one was being towed on a boogy board and the others ended up in the drink somehow. All is well that ends well I guess and hopefully a lesson learned.
Trace's fish were all caught on Squidgy 100mm Red Rum Wrigglers (her favorite,,,and staying that way given that she tried 3 or 4 other SPs today for nil), 2 of mine were on Zman Grubs (on the 4lb line) and one on Zman Curly Tail (on the 6lb) both in motor oil cloour. My new favorite over the past couple of trips.
So another fun, beautiful, eventful day on the Pine...that River never ceases to entertain.
