What Colour Pallete Best for Snapper Sounding???

Hey Guys I have a Lowrance HDS5 and have recently seen a few posts of ppl using a diff colour pallete than to what i have been used to. I have been using no13 but see No14 being used a bit. I will be sounding in depths of 20 to 36 fathoms mostly. Also as I have a dual beam transducer (83/200) at what depth do you normally switch over to the 83??
I would appreciate any and all comments
    Cheers Dicko

    Hi mate.

I normally find that I change the palette most of the time depending on water conditions, (depth, temp, salinity).

Basically I don't lock in anything and my settings are always updated every trip and they change every trip.

I know that doesn't answer your questions, but that is what works for me.

    Cheers

Hey Dicko I have the same unit and just put a gen 2 5x beside it and I'm now using the 50/200 Tranducer worlds apart mate it is such an improvement over the 83/200 chalk and cheese to be honest if you can afford it mate pick up a 50/200 you won't look back

Thanks guys... it always happens hey.. u buy the best and it gets superceded a year later I was advised that as I would be fishing 36 fathoms that the 83/200 would be the better transducer. Is the Gen 2 that much better???

Not so much the Gen2 Dicko its the 50/200 transducer that i found the biggest improvement !
I thought i was getting a 50/200 with the gen 1 and got home and fitted unit to find i had fitted the 83/200 Rectified what i originally wanted with second sounder.
The way i look at it is i can nav by compass or Iphone if plotter goes down but its like being blindfolded without the sounder.
You can pick up 50/200 Transducers online fairly cheap.
Side by side the Gen 2 has a little less lag as the processor is quicker i bought it purely to run the LSS2 Structure scan.
I'm more than happy with the gen 1 performance just having one screen for charts and the other for the sounder and scan works well, 2 HDS-5 units are still cheaper than 1 HDS-7
    hope this helps

The 83/200khz transducer is better suited to fresh water lakes. the 50/200khz will be much better for the salt water and ocean.

Gen 1 and Gen 2 use the same transducers.

Sorry to hijack, I run a 83/200 on my gen2 HDS7, and have a spare x510c that I'm going to mount on my casting deck, I am thinking about running the 83/200 to the x510c and hooking up a 50/200 to the HDS7, any thoughts? i don't normally fish deeper then 45m.

    Hi Blythy,

I you have a 50/200 KHz transducer for the HDS then certianly hook that up. It will give you a better picture in salt water. There is plenty of articles on google about the different transducers. The 50/200 was made for saltwater the 83/200 KHz made for the great lakes of the USA.

It has to really do with depth penatration. Depending on the depth the deeper you go the lower frequency you want to use you can run both frequencys at the same time by using the pages screen select sounder then scroll down to sounder is its split view and will run both frequencys in split view then assess which one provides the picture you require

Ive gotan older Lowrance LMS527 and I still only ever use the 200KHz in everything up to 100m deep. Still works well. Dont know what depth it would change to the lower frequency?
