i dont like either unless they are new both have things i dont like the older suzukis blow holes in the exhaust ports the yamahas have a single complete crankshaft so cost a fortune replacing if it needs rebuilding
go a 4 stroke and dont look back
Hi guys im after the following motors. Please let me know if you have one for sale.
40hp suzuki - prefer short shaft tiller steer but will consider any 40 suzuki.
40hp yamaha 3 cyl must be tiller steer and must have gears on the side, not in the tiller.
Will buy one of these in any condition. Not after any other make or engine as these are the only two I'm after. Thanks everyone.

Hi there. I need it for a specific purpose. I need light weight and grunt. Suzuki disolve in water buy are reliable until the corrosion gets too bad. Yamaha are very good. Yes the 40 has a one piece crank (as does the Tohatsu) and it is expensive. i have a 50hp Tohatsu with bearing noise and you have to replace the crank or have it pressed apart and the bearings replaced which all adds up.
not too sure you would buy a motor on how much it might cost to rebuild! that being said, have you priced a rebuild on a 4 stroke? and they all have a one peice crank! either of those motors will be OK, but best of luck finding one, especially since you want a short shaft! might be looking for something that will almost never come up for sale.
i ment by the crank as in the conrods, conrod bearings, crankshaft bearings are not able to be replaced by the average joe on some outboards yamaha is one who sells a complete crankshaft the crank needs to be pressed apart on the 2 strokers where as other brands like johnson and evinrude's crankshafts can be dismantled its all bolted together and riverrat is asking for a 40hp engine with side gears so hes looking in the second hand range and in buying any second hand engine i would factor in the cost of a rebuild as outboards may live a long life but they have been rebuilt many times
