Question Stabiliser Fins -Stingray Hydrofoils etc

    Hi Ausfishers

I'm considering purchasing some type of stabiliser fin for my Yammi F70 - mainly to improve low speed planning & to reduce porpoising (trim sensitive)
I've previously used an alloy bolt on type(Dolphin) on a quintrex 535 CC running a 75 Mariner 2 stroke ...... and was amazed at the allround improvement - but that was 10 years ago
Today there seems to be a fair few options of both bolt on and non bolt on types
Firstly .......Does fitting a bolt on type void the motors warranty ?
Secondly....Who makes the best type of non bolt ons - how good / effective are they ? - Do they come loose ?
Thirdly....... Best option for a F70 Yammi

    Anything else ???

    Much appreciated

    Gday Nagg,

IMO Permatrim is the only one - I have had one on both the F50 & F70 and they are great. Haven't lost more than a knot of top speed but you do get all the benefits.

Had both fitted at Stones Corner, never been a mention of voiding warranty, however I am sure if you stood on it and broke the cav plate then you would probably be on your own.

There are 2 sizes for the F70, I have the smaller and I am happy with that but yours with the steering controls may benefit from the larger.

What prop are you running? If it is the Yamaha Stainless performance series I would bin it.

    How is the new boat??

Interesting ........atm I'm just running a standard yammi alloy prop
I'll have a chat to Wayne at Stones

Boat seems to be pretty good - just tweaking things now

    Thanks for the heads up

Honestly Nagg try some motor heights and engine wedges before you drill any holes.......My origin 5mtr gave me a heart attack with porposing on its first and second trips but with some experiment with engine height, prop choice and engine wedges we sussed it out without having to drill holes. It now performs the way a good hull should.

With other boats that i have owned i have used the Permatrim type foil with great success but i also never went through the process of elimination with props, engine heights and wedges either........i'm glad i did this time...

Talk to the guys at Sea Jay about your issues and i'm sure they will help you through it if they want their product to be the best it can be.

The porpoising is not a big issue unless trimming the motor right out - in general there is no problem .
Motor height seems pretty right (I'm getting full RPMs .... but still need to trim in on a hard turn ) ........ as for props - well that will be a work in progress.
I will have a chat to Troy at Seajay though

Nagg, if your thinking about permatrim then you can a get a kit so you don't have to drill holes. I've just got 1 from the states that came over with Steve's new boat. I already had the SE 300 but couldn't bring myself to drill holes in the new motor. Haven't put it on yet so I don't know how good it will be.
If your thinking of the SE300 and you want to try before you buy then it shouldn't be too much trouble to bolt it on and try it with no holes to drill. Send me a pm if you want to give it a go.

Re: Stabiliser Fins -Stingray Hydrofoils etc

FWIW I have found my Seajay 4.55 doesn't like allot of out trim, I found I had to re-adjust my driving style to not use allot of out trim at all as compared to other boats I have had.

I haven't tried engine wedges, perhaps I should have. But I have gone through 5 different props, and each engine height settling on the highest setting.

Best prop on my boat so far is the SOLAS 14" stainless, but it is only slightly better than the standard yamaha prop, if even the standard prop does slip quite a bit.

Try Driving without so much out trim and see how you go.

Thanks for the feedback ........ yeh I've already modified my driving style probably only get to trim the motor out to 70-80% before any minor bouncing

I would be lucky to get that far but my hull is working properly with minimal out trim, and there is no torque through the tiller so I figure that is just how it operates.

Re: Stabiliser Fins -Stingray Hydrofoils etc

I 2nd the idea to get the height and prop right before bolting anything on, but having said that, I had a permatrim on my Etec40 tiller and it made a WORLD of difference. Check out this little video I made of the before and after fitting the permatrim. Each start was from stopped, motor trimmed all the way in, and a smooth application of throttle to full power.

I had way more trim control with the permatrim, I could hold the bow high or drive it down hard to cut through chop, loved it.

Kondo......maybe 5 degree engine wedges will help your problem?.......a mate has the little 415 territory with a 40 suzy 4strk on the back in tiller and his rig is a PITA with porposing ,he won't buy wedges as he is a tight@arse and wants to lug around 30ltrs of water up the bow to fix it.

Nagg maybe just drop down a prop pitch or 1/2' dia to give some better lower planing control when in the rough stuff?......Easy soloution just don't forget to keep an eyeball on the tacho...........is the 70 Yammy as smooth as the 60hp mate?.......I heard rumors it was a little noisy?........

    Hi Dan

I've got a lower pitch prop when carrying the heavier loads (someone called it a paddle ) but I still want to investigate a good stainless all round prop .
The 70 definitely has a growl to it when you open the throttle ....... but at idle you still have to look around to see if the tell tail is squirting ...... I've come close to trying to start it while the motor was running .

Re: Stabiliser Fins -Stingray Hydrofoils etc

I have a tabs 5.4 half cab with 90 honda vtec. Without a permatrim fitted, the boat tended to squat when taking off and while on the plane if the deckie walked to the back of the boat it would tend to squat again, especially in open waters where a lower plane speed is required. After fitting the permatrim the boat now just lifts straight out of the hole upon takeoff, I can plane at a much slower speed and even 2 deckies can be down the back and the boat still wont squat. I played with different props, adjusted motor height before I fitted the permatrim. The permatrim has not affected my wot speed at all and since putting it on!! I have decreased my fuel usage from 1.7 k/l to now 2.4 k/l. Just for the record I run a 13 1/4 x15 solas 4 blade stainless. The permatrim is worth every penny. Cheers Brad.

I have the same motor on a 5.5m Savage that I'm hoping will be able to achieve similar results as far as lifting the back end up.

Do you have any scope to adjust the front to back weight NAGG, to my way of thinking the boat should be balanced right then trimmed to push the stern forward rather than up or down.
