Well my boat is at Pete's at the moment getting some sounder work done (plus some other stuff), so when discussing this with him when I dropped it off, I said to him "you have Peter privileges with this boat" which means he goes over the electrical system and replaces/tidies anything that HE feels needs attention. Better it get sorted now than 20mile offshore later!

WalrusLike, the boat in your Avatar looks like a TPB ? I have one too and I have the same type of switch panel (mines a 6 switch version), the wires you ask about are the LED power wires as suggested above. One will power the individual LED's in each button/switch and the other will turn the lot on at night when your NAV lights go on. Thats the wire you need to tap into for your compass light, so it goes on with your NAV lights. Did you buy the compass seperately or was it installed but not connected when you bought the boat ?

When I took my boat out last I could smell a burning smell coming from the cabin. Grabbed the fire ext and went under for a look and found the smell coming from under the dash. I have it booked in tomorrow morning to get checked.

I think it is going to be the nav lights as that was the only thing I had on different from the other times I went out. I switched everything off and then turned on things one at a time and left the nav lights off.
I had it at the auto elec a little while back as the dealer had used a zip tie rather than a clamp for the hose on the bait tank and it had been dripping onto the electrics and shorted them out.
edit to say def not back to the dealer, like you it is to far for a minor issue. If it was something under warranty I might but otherwise I stick to local.

The auto elec couldnt find anything wrong which I find a bit strange. Anyway switched everything on while I cleaned the boat and no smell.
At least the boat is cleaned and its already hooked up for an early morning start so its not a total waste of time going there haha.

Make sure everything has the correct size fuses... at least if there is a problem it will be protected.

Thanks thats what the auto elec said and told me not to worry they are all ok. I dont know what the smell was but it was strong and smelled like burned plastic. Ohnwell will see how it goes in the morning when I have everything is switched on again.
