PB at Peel + fish ID

Hit the water at 4am from Viccy Point. Was wetting a line at Peel by 4.30am. It was a bit slow for the first hour, then they started to come on the bite. Lots of undersized grassies, tuskfish, and a couple of bream here and there. But, also a few good keepers. My misses picked up her PB today. However, we are unsure as to what specie it is... can anyone help us out please? We were using stinky (prawn and squid). I tried SPs for a while, to no avail Ended our session with a dip in Horse Shoe Bay - all in all, great day out

Nice work mate. That fish is a Morwong or Slatey Bream. Goes by many names aka mother in law fish. Some say they are crap to eat but I have eaten one fresh and thought it was OK. Your mrs looks pretty chuffed either way mate.

I always thought the mother in law fish was the sweet lip as they have big lips which in turn gives them a big mouth... Maybe that's the territory lingo.

Yeah you will find there also known as Painted Sweetlip

Looks like a painted sweetlip to me have caught a few around Peel of late and looks like maybe close to the spot where you might have been just a small gravel patch holding a nice selection of squire, painted sweetlip and a heap of pike. Was also told by a mate on board that they were called the Mother in Law fish as you would only keep them for her, don't think he likes the taste of fish if that is the case, have taken a couple and find that they are good eating when fresh little different if they have been frozen. The flesh is bit more pink than usual and has very tough skin but filleted and skinned, no complaints.

Alright hears the scoop, just cooked the 'mother in law' up whole in al-foil, tomato, onion, butter and some wine. IMO it was very tasty and filling. I feel it has an unwarranted reputation.
Lew, she wasn't aware there was a fish on the line at first...and very little fight. Even after we pulled it into the boat it didn't flap around that much at all. A sloth of a fish.

Heya mate awesome she would of loved that catching her pb congrats.. Any strange looking fish i would ask the locals then if eatable then try it hahahaha im the other way i would try it even if it wasnt good to eat hahahaha.

Your right, my two girls (wife and daughter) go with me every trip. Went out to Peel again today for 3 hours before the wind blew up. Came home with a nice tuskfish and threw back a couple of grassies.
