Fuel economy 140 / 115 Suzuki four stroke

Not happy with fuel ecomy on new boat About 1 KLM per litre Boats about 980 kg. I've heard the suzukies get around 2 KLM per litre. Is this true ? And do they have enough grunt ?

Gidday - Ive just put a 140 suzuki on my old sportfish - been watching the fuel consumption pretty carefully since new - Motors done about forty hours now and has slowly been getting better as it loosens up.
Running a solas 13 7/8 x 19 s/s prop its now getting 15.8hr /hr and 0.8L / km - running pretty hard at 5800rpm doing about 28 to 29 knots.I dont know that I'd ever get 2km per Lt at these higher speeds - trolling speed yes definely, but not at higher running speeds.Depends what is pushing I suppose.As for grunt - its definately requires a little more accelleration to push onto the plan compared to the 130 2 stroke yammy I had prior, but once up and going the grunt is there.Definatelty wont go back to the 130 . Plenty of advantages - no fumes,less noise ,better fuel consumption , easy to start- just got to push it a little more to get it up on the plane.Seems to be a great motor.

Some pics of my 2012 140 running the GMI gauges at some different revs on a 5mtr Origin plate boat,4500rpm seems to be the sweet spot as far as economy and speed work for this hull.......4500 gives me just on 50kph for 23ltrs per hr.......just over 2k per ltr..........thats with a 14x21 alloy.................i have a 14x20 ss i'm yet to try but it should be around the same IMO.

get around 1-1.2k/ltr out of 2 140hp suzuki's on a 2400 kc...i work on 1ltr per k combined and its prett close to the mark so i recon u will get the 2k/ltr out of our boat easy

Why'd you buy your boat then? I would have hung out for something with a 4 banger instead of E-Bombs.

are you considering selling your etecs and replacing them with 2 suzukis? surely if youre still running two motors the savings in fuel wouldnt be enough to justify the change-over costs especially with even bigger albeit four bangers no matter what brand?

the biggest saving i can see would be your oil and i think your holeshot would be slightly less when you consider weight and power delivery differences. also the 140hp is slightly lighter than the 90/115 suzi.

Was Gona change 2 x etecs 75 to 1 x 140 Suzuki. That will double my fuel efficiency. From 1 KLM per litre to 2 KLM. So it seams

ok now i see what you are getting at. better fuel economy and no added oil to worry about would certainly cut ongoing costs down.

what do the 2 etecs weigh in at now and what would your boat weigh with a 140hp suzi?
i find my 140 on a 1150kg boat a good match with good performance but i certainly wouldnt want to go any smaller on hp. correctly propping the suzis is fun - not

dan5 how do you find performance with the 21p? i think the 20p stainless would be far better - have you tried it yet?

The 21p is fine for the river........gives me good speed and economy.........remember i only have a 5mtr alloy boat so even with 200ltrs on board and 3 guys and gear the engine is not working for a living............I went the 20p for the bluewater just to give me a bit more "control" and the ability to plane slower.......unfortunatly i hav'nt been able to get out and test it.........I am getting to 6000rpm with the 21 loaded so the 20 will be easy.

I've got pretty much the same as this, a 140 on a 5.8m sportfish centercab , fully loaded it would be about 1400kg, don't have any fuel flow meters in it but we get around 1.7km/L on average (sitting on 5500rpm at 50-55km/hr), the worst we got was 1.56km/L but that was with a full tank of fuel (290L) 350L fiberglass esky full of fish and ice and 4 people in the boat, was blowing a good 15-20knts the whole 200km round trip and never had a problem with the power of the engine but had to work the throttle pretty hard which wouldn't have helped the fuel use.

Not 100% convinced that your numbers will add up, 2 X 75HP compared to a single 140HP, the fuel difference is not gojng to be as dramatic as you think it will be, and the 140HP is not going to give you the sort of torque you have now, also the "new" (90A) 90HP Suzuki is way lighter than the 115/140, I would think long and hard about what you want to achieve, there is a lot of money at stake here on a "maybe"

If I were you I would be looking at a 175 Suzy or a 150 Yammy. The suzuki 140 is a beatiful motor but it likes to be singing, under 4000 revs it does,nt have very much. I had a 2004 model on my EC 565 and it was really too small for that hull design,kept falling off the plane at 3500.that was with a 14x19 prop,but the gearing was different to the new ones. If your boat can have a 175 go for that, it transformed mine like you would,nt believe.PS. mine done 67kmph WOT and I used to get around 2ks to the litre if I drove at 4500rpm, but usually around 1.7 cruising at 5000-5500,50-55kmph.

There must be somthing else going on here for that fuel useage. I wouldn't have thought twin 75 etecs woould be using more than 20L/hr combined. At say 20 knots?

I'd be looking very closely at motor height and props.

Personally I would be adding cupping to whatever props you end up with to be able to run them pretty high, as with alloy and twins you will get a fair bit of ventillation.

I think that boat with the twins would be much better than a single. Your ride will get much worse with a single.
