I always make sure my backing is stronger than my braid. The only way to do it is put the braid on first, top shot with mono until full, then wind it onto another spool, repeat and then onto reel. Its a pain in the @&$#
Got a new reel today. And I cant find much of answer for this question. Would it be stupid to wrap 20lb mono to the spool then the rest 10lb braid? or what size should i go? Only have 110 yards of braid. Any tricks to getting the right amount of mono as well? I dont have a spare spool so i cant do the other trick.

I use empty line spools with a bolt through it mounted in a drill to swap line around etc
BOAT really does mean Bring out Another Thousand
Duct tape on the end of a drill bit till it fits inside the middle of the new line spool works a treat
