Chrysler outboard 45HP + fiberglass boat

Hey guys im looking at buying this Chrysler outboard 45HP + fiberglass boat off a guy at the end of my street I KNOW FOR A FACT THAT the boat has been garaged for at least 20 years... (selling due to his gf being pregnant)


PROBLEM IS!
it was his birthday 5 months ago and his GF decided to throw him a surprise birthday
in order to get the boat out of the garage to make some room they asked to borrow it! he left them a list with things like what to do and one of the things was fuel ratio!!!

Now when they took it out and brought it back he rekens when he switched it on that the boat sounded rough and idled a bit funny and slightly cut out!


After speaking with a older guy who is a marine mechanic he told me all it needs is a carby kit and a service/clean!

Did they run the outboard when they took it out of the shed?
If they did and ran it on straight fuel for more then an extremely short time then the motor can be turned into either a reef or anchor.
If the marine dude thinks it only needs a bit of a service then get him to do it as long as there is a guarantee that that's all that's wrong with it.
Shove a bore scope or inspection camera down the bores and have a gander.

Looks like an old Pongrass. They were built well enough but not the greatest hull design. The Chrysler would probably be the same vintage as the boat, a seventies job which makes it fairly old. It all comes down to dollars in the end. If you can get it cheap, it may be worth it.

G'day Mate, If you are going to buy the boat forget that there is a motor on the back, mate i had a 45hp Chrysler some 25 years ago always had problems, would not dare of getting another one, repairing that motor constantly will be a bottom less pit plus expensive. If you upgrade to a current model i think you will also find that the Chrysler is power head rated at 45hp not like these days were outboards are prop rated so if you do upgrade just check your Maximum H.P rating for that Hull. First of all thanx for the quick response!

Well the guy was going to give it to me for 2500 with the rescue motor 15hp Johnson life jackets, tilt trailer and everything registed for a year!

Just wanted to let you know all I'm using this boat for is bay fishing and river fishing not near the heads or past them I have been fishing from shore all my life and all I wanted to do is fish 20 meters out more than where I am is this option better than a 2000 setup kayak? Lol

Yeh it's a pongrass, ive got the same boat and has been great. Mine has a 40hp and gets along fine.

I paid about the same, I had the motor checked and compression tested to make sure it was in good condition. Mine is an '88 model and the motor is a oil injected mercury.

They be basically the same thing if the outboard fails.

Most of these are in other states as you come closer to Sydney the price increases... At least I know this boat has worked and stayed consistent till 5 months ago... I'll get my marine mechanic to have a look the mechanic is also my mate he won't rip me off I guess I'll bargain the other guy down to 2000 would be half worth it then.

nahh i don't think they did... he was saying that the revs were not consistent that it was revving in and out ! IM IN Belmore NSW

had one of those old 45 chylers many years ago , couldn't kill it with a stick. it also had a rough idle all the time had an old timer look at it one day and he fix it with some "wadding" (like cotten string) one one of the carb idle screws. Idled perfect and ran smooth. never had any issues expect it's thirst for fuel. it was a heavy bastard as well.
