Other options for land based at Fraser

I'm heading up to Fraser with the in-laws next week based at Orchid Beach. So as I am getting all my gear together (plastics, poppers, slugs, etc, etc.) the 'brothers' in law are taking the piss out of me, telling me I will only catch dart and what's the point in all the other gear.

So now I am determined to catch some other species on something other than pippies.

Anyone have some suggestions on other options?

I was thinking pillies, slugs or plastics from the rocks (Indian head/Waddy point) but I am definitely open to suggestions.

Pride is on the line here...

    Thanks, Pete.

Plenty of other species to be caught other than dart but they are probably the likliest catch for the least effort . Trevally, tuna, jew, mackerel, queenfish, bonefish have all been caught up there plus many more.! Ben

Sounds good. Can you give me some idea of baits rigs you think would work.
    Thanks,Pete.

a pilly (pilchard) on three or four ganged hooks is a standard simple rig for fraser that will catch most things. You can buy premade gangs in all tackle stores. pyramid sinkers or the oval shaped ones so your bait doesnt get washed into shore followed by a swivel and trace to the gangs. Some nice whiting around the headlands if the dart dont get in first. Some nice live sandworms would be the go.

Try after dark with a large hook and some fresh fish flesh for a jew. Spinning the rocks with raiders, poppers, large minnows, gar and pillies could produce near anything! Just do things differently to the inlaws and you'll probably catch a wider variety of species than them. Ben

If youre throwing popper around waddy at high tide, you might want to use 100lbs trace and hang on to your rod. Plenty of medium size GT and the odd bulldozer to make it interesting. Wathumba at low tide you can wade over to the sand flats using beach worm can produce a good feed of whiting. If you can get to the cape, make sure you got a decent rig set up with a slug on the end, and every bait school you see while driving along will harbor large pelagics its not unusual to pull up a longtail or Trev of some form. Driving further around the cape is a very good spot for large whitings also.
    Good luck.

Try a whole side of mullet or fresh tailor on some 7/0s early morning or dusk into dark for a big jew. Look for some nice gutters that run out to the backline and fish these.

Mate I'll be going up there with the family next week too, and also based at Orchid Beach. Like yourself i'm looking to expand away from 'just dart' and possibly fish the rocks or a few night sessions. Is it you first time to Fraser? Shoot us a PM if you need a couple keen fishing mates to help (possebly?????) you out-do the in laws.

Also thanks to others for the usefull info above.
