yeah sounds about right I have a 5.4 tabs half cab with a 90 honda vtec wot I get 33 knots, mate has a 5.5 seafarer viking 140 suzuki wot he gets 34 knots the Tabs is 1200 kg on the water 2 pob the seafarer is 1400kg on water with 2 pob cheers
The top speed you are getting is only part of the story. The MOST important thing is that your engine is hitting close to its max RPM range when at full throttle and trimmed out (bow up as far as it can go without the prop letting go).
The reason for this is that boats only have 1 forward gear and if the engine is not propped correctly so that it can rev right out, it will mean that you are "lugging" or overloading it when operating normally. Bit like driving a manual car around in top gear all the time. Doing this to any marine engine will severely shorten its life. So, although you may only rarely (or never) actually run at flat out speeds, it needs to be capable of getting those revs.
And incldentally, when you do get that right, the engine nearly always runs more economically at cruise speeds, even though you might be running at higher revs than before.

Thanks Moonlighter. I think it is actually revving higher than spec so I need to try it again.
I must admit that the last time I ran out of room before I had settled in to pay close attention to cav plate, revs etc. it all happened a bit fast....
It wasn't unsafe or anything... No boats around but I didnt want to turnaround the mark at that speed till I was more sure of the boat and me.
