Where in the Rev Range is good for an Outboard

What do you class as too far through the rev range. Got a 75hp Merc (2 Stroke) on a 5m Quinnie Top Ender, WOT is at 5500rpm, seems to sit well at 4500rpm, but is this too much.
I generally run my little tinnie, 30 Merc 2st, at a touch off full throttle and it seems to like it, but not sure where to run the 75.
    What's ya thoughts?

wherever it's happiest, taking into account ride etc and conditions your driving in. I will run flat out while in the river till I hit the heads then generally sit on between 3200 and 4500 depending on conditions.....fuel econ is another thing, some outboard/boat combos will actually use less fuel at a slightly higher rev as the motor isn't dragging

4,500 will not hurt that motor one bit, use it, enjoy it and don't be scared to give it some RPM!

    Ya old hoon Noel!

My little boat gets driven like its stolen and loves it. New boat will cost too much to do that.

yep, that's me, a hoon!! (well untill I got some 4 strokes) carby 2 strokes love revs, even though in your mind you keep thinking that to keep the revs down will be better, it is not the case, they need some RPM to keep them running in their power band.

I seem to run everywhere with the 115 yammy 2 stroke at 4500. Cheers

If conditions allow I run my 50 merc @ 4500 or so
WOT is 5500 but I get very little speed gain for the extra juice
As others have said it actually uses more juice tooling around
Something to watch when it gets sloppy!

For a 2S it's thing called the power band, you will know it when in it things will sing sweetly and it's not the higher end revs you need to worry about.

My Baysport 575 glass with 115 Yammie 2 st also likes 4200 to 4500 as a sweet spot as OzScott says.

Haven't proved it by consumption figures.... It just sounds and feels that way.

I did a WOT test and I think I recall seeing 6,000 revs at 35.5 knots. I don't know if that is good or bad. I suspect bad because I haven't got it all sorted properly yet.

Interesting point my service agent showed me when I had my Yammy 115 4s serviced, they can see the history of the motor and how I have been "treating" it. The statistics shown on my report basically tells them I have been a good boy! I get top marks. I usually sit at around 4500 to 4800 rpm and occasionally give her a W.O.T spurt which does not usually last long... That's what I told my mechanic. But he said it's amazing how many WOT runs accumulate over the 208 hours the motor has done!!

Re: Where in the Rev Range is good for an Outboard

I run my 175 Merc Opti at 4000-4500rpm and it runs along nicely and get good economy but as the guys here have said there is nothing like puching the throttle down a 175 Merc at 6000rpm belts out and awsome noise but I will alternate between 4000 and 4500 rpm depending on conditions.

Pretty normalish mate depending on weight and shape and trim. My Vag with 3 blokes and gear does 32-35 knots or so at 6000. Cheers
