    Re: Propeller Advise

Hey Brett, IMO that recupped 17" Solas will be lucky to pick up 200 rpm @ wot.. You want to be getting at least 5500rpm with your usual full load, (not in a empty boat),, thats why I suggested a 15" in the Rebel or the Cyclone..
The standard SS, if like the SST or Viper, when swapping to a Rebel or Cyclone you need to drop 2" in pitch to maintain same wot rpm, IE, 20" SST will have same rpm as a 18" Rebel or Cyclone. However you need to increase your wot rpms to 5800 for a light load. 600rpm increase... Each 2" is equal to 150-180rpm.. So if your prop is like the Viper or SST the 15" Rebel will spin to approx 5800rpm with a light load.. That is the experience I have had testing Vipers, Rebels and Cyclones back to back on a Seafarer hull.... And IMHO the SST and Viper is garbage on the Seafarer hull unless you only want to travel flat out... The Rebel and Cyclone are by for superior for offshore, choppy rough water, slow speed planing and economical cruising..

    Re: Propeller Advise

Went for a run with the new prop on Saturday afternoon out in the bay.. Man did it make a difference.. I had full fuel and some fishing gear, I would call it my average load...
It jumped on to the plan and lifted that ass up with out even using the trim tabs and it held it at a lower speed then before, cruised along nicely at 3500rpm at 43-45km/h.. 4000rpm we were going 58-60km/h..The motor sounded A LOT smoother and more responsive.. I never tried to hit WOT as the conditions were not great and I had the little lady on board...

One thing that surprised me was I was going faster then the other prop at the same revs but the motor was doing it a lot smoother... before is was a headache to hold the boat at 3500rpm as it wanted to keep bogging down and I would need to cruise around 3800+ to keep it cruising without having to touch the throttle, Now it sits on 3500rpm and going faster but never looked like bogging down... Sure I wasn't offshore but the boat felt a heap better..

I will post my figures again after I get offshore where it will be better to judge its performance. But at the moment I am impressed

    Cheers

Mate You might be onto something as I tested WOT yesterday and I can only get 5300rpm.. So I am going to call Solas and see if they recommend the 15" or I will try the 17" 4 blade...

I like how the 4 blade is working, cruising speed is up and fuel and oil is down, But I need the extra revs...

    Re: Propeller Advise

That 17" 4 blade isnt going to do it for you, it's still way too tall for your boat motor combo... Looking at the Solus Props, and knowing what I know about them (I have a few conversations with Mick) the type 5, 3 blade, is a identical to the BRP Rebel, and the type 6, 4 blade is ver similar to the BRP cyclone..
A 17" in any off these 2 props in not going to lift your RPM's high enough, especialy the Type 6. Even in a 16" pitch it is going to be on the edge off the lower limits off the optium rev range...

However, if you dont want to drop too much pitch, because you dont want to lose too much speed. I would lift the motor as high as you can, (My cav plate is 58mm above the keel line) and the cyclone holds on very well at that height. It will also give you an extra 200 rpm @ WOT..
So if you want to try the Type 6 in a 16" pitch and you dont quiet get up to 5800rpm with a light load. You can lift the motor and gain that extra RPM... Personaly, if it were my boat, that is the avenue I would be looking at...

    Re: Propeller Advise

Thanks Jabba for the advise, I talked to Solas again and they seem confident there 17" 4 blade will bring the revs up to close to the the 5600rpm loaded heavy, which should give me the extra 200rpm when running medium to light loads.... Seeing most of my fishing I cover about 100-140km in a day, I need good cruise Figures as I normally run for a minimum of an hour each way to my fishing spots and this is done at 3500-4300rpm..

I had a look at the height of the motor while cruising along at 3500rpm and the Cav plate it about 2cm above the water and is just getting a bit of stray onto it while cruising so I don't think I can lift the motor without getting cavitation issues, I had a LOT of problems with the prop loosing grip with the 3 blade in offshore conditions... With the 4 blade I have noticed that I can trim out higher then I could with the 3 blade and this has helped with fuel figures while cruising

Solas are fine with me trying there props to we find the one best suited to my boat. After I try the 17" I will give your suggestion a go.

    Cheers

I notice4d this as well. I also noticed that I had to trim the motor very high to get the best speed and highest rpm with the 4 blade. So high I thought it would be coming out of the water. I would really check that full throttle on the controls is really full throttle on the motor while you are doing all this. it only takes a small mis adjustment to make a big difference at wot.
its very easy just open the throttle all the way and check if you can move the throttle linkages further in the open direction by hand at the motor

I must of got Solas on a bad day.I rang them last week and they didn't offer me any advice on prop selection.I have a 15 x17 on a 115 johnno doing 6300 rpm trimmed out and both the 2 ladies I spoke to at Solas said they dont recommend going bigger than a 17" prop.I suppose I should have asked why but I just blew it off instead. The people at Downs Marine have been very helpful with my prop selection.

    Re: Propeller Advise

don't trust what your original prop actually is

take it to Colin at Performance Propellors and have it propscan measured to see what it really is

I went round in circles trying to find the right prop for mine going by the 17" pitch marking on the original prop. dropped back to a 15"p 4 blade solas and couldn't work out why still overpropped till Colin did the propscan and found out that the 17"p original prop had been repitched to 15.4"p by the original owner..... ended up being recommended by Colin to buy a 13" P solas 3 blade and hit the nail on the head perfectly for prop choice.

Colin made nothing out of the deal, but is the first person I will take my next prop issue to and buy a propellor through next time.

I could not recommend Performance Propellors more

    Re: Propeller Advise

Fishhunter, At the last service (about 25hrs ago) I asked Wynnum Marine to check that I was getting full throttle as I wasn't getting enough revs out of the motor. They said they checked and everything was fine, maybe I should check it myself to make sure...

As a car mechanic with many years dealership experience I have very little faith in the average dealership mechanic and would be checking it myself

    Re: Propeller Advise

Ok guys I got the chance on the weekend to give the boat a good run with the 17" 4 blade... WOW what a difference it was I now reach 5600rpm loaded with fuel and fishing gear. It cruises at 40km/h at 3500rpm and using 25-28L/hr.... at that speed if I drop the hammer it JUMPS to 5000rpm and just launches, was glad I was hanging onto the steering wheel. 4000rpm its doing 55km/hr and using 33-35l/hr (not 100% sure on this figure but its close)... WOT 5600rpm its doing 75-78km/hr and using 55-60L/hr never sat on that speed for to long...

I did a rough estimate and I used about 40L less with this prop on the day. Happy is an understatement

    Cheers
