    Ideal Sounder for Tiller Setup

    Ideas and pictures anyone?

Position, brand, size and techniques to keep sunlight out of viewing?

I know the Furunos come with an anti glare coating on the screen but you will be able to get a stick on anti glare sheet for pretty much any sounder screen off of ebay for bugger all, so IMO pick whatever sounder you think will be best suited to the type of fishing you will be doing.

    THanks.

What about positioning of the sounder when using a tiller?

What to use and where to place it?

How far away is too far from eyes?

I have a Furuno FCV620 mounted on top of the console and I can still see it clearly 3m away in the back corner of the boat when fishing.

    Thanks for that Marto.

I never thought these units could be viewed from such a long away.....

I have the Furuno 585 unit (large colour screen).

Check out my hull (in photos attached) and you will see the SC that I am considering using it as a mounting station for everything (including the sounder) as I will be gong tiller instead.

I guess - my next concern is this - how much of a hassle would it be not being able to toggle the buttons (for changing depth, etc..) whilst underway if I placed this sounder within this SC unit??

My other option is to remove this console and connect a RAM Mount onto the side hand rail on the gunnell - rear starboard....

This will free up space in the cockpit as well.

Before you buy any brackets I would be taking your boat out into full sun with the sounder on demo mode and moving it around the boat to see where the best position for it would be. If you are mostly fishing creeks and rivers how often will you have to change the depth range anyway? If the transducer works well at speed you could always leave the depth setting in auto mode.

    Thanks Guys.

Marto - I also have the M260 Wetbox ikW in hull transducer
    http://www.chsmith.com.au/Products/M...ransducer.html

Would this transducer be overkill for river fishing in the NT?

How would this transducer perform with the polycraft / plastic medium ?

Should I remove the SC unit?

Pig - thanks for link and I LOVE that ram mount you used coming up from the bottom of the side wall. Please tell me what model number you used, fitment methodology, etc...

Re: Ideal Sounder for Tiller Setup

I only have the 600w transom mount transducer on my boat and can see fish clearly in 70m of water so I don't think you will have a problem with the 1kw model in the river, you might upset a few mud geckos tho lol
As for it working through the hull I don't know too much about that style of transducer but I can't see it being a problem at least you won't bust it off on a sandbar or something.
The side console is a great place to put everything IMO and if you decide you don't like it you can always rip it out at a later stage. The only thing I don't like about it is the tinted wind screen as you can't see bugger all through them at night.

Not being able to toggle underway would be a PITA IMO...

    thanks boys.

Pig75 - What was your choice on the D101 over the multitude of all other RAM mounts on offer?

What was your motivation to mount from bottom - as opposed to something perhaps more at eye level, etc??

And, what about sun piercing over your shoulder as you look down into this screen - any issues there?

You will not need a 1kw trany up here, unless you find the mother of all holes, you will find deeper holes where your working.Just go fishing its not that high tec!!!!

    Totally Agree Chris !!

I am sure I could have fished that hole last year though....lol

I will place the 585 and 1KW ducer into cotton wool and buy something less powerful... any ideas?

Re: Ideal Sounder for Tiller Setup

I have the 585 in my rig and imo it does not like the quick changes that you will experience in the estuary or river system,i have the garmin 551s as a back up sounder,i use this in the shallower water and it serves it purpose!!!
    Cheers Chris.
