    Advice Required

I,m rebuilding an existing rod. The problem is i want to increase the number of guides. It is a finished blank with a gloss surface, when the existing guides are removed the color preserver leaves a dull finish. Do i sand & coat this with lite finish?

The new build is to be used for jigging, would i be better using an 8mm or 10mm final guides & tip so the knots pass through cleanly.

    I will be jigging 20M - 50M with about 15Kg braid to a 30Kg leader

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Jerson
I have rebuilt a few rods I have have got around that problem by repainting the Rod blank ,then either spray the blank with a Clear Gloss or use a product like U-40 perma Gloss over the painted blank
I have kept track of a couple of the rebuilt rods and alls good
As for the guides I suggest 10 to help with Knots

    Thanks for the reply Willo.
Have you ever sanded a blank to a matt finish as you see on some new blanks.
I will have to spend some time cleaning up the existing guide locations, I may just do the whole blank.
This rod is glass, would it affect the strength.

You are better of sanding the blank and re painting. No matter how good your touch up skills are you wont get it looking like one finish.
Sand it back with 400 wet and dry then clean with thinners or acetone. You only need to sand as much as reqiered to knock the high spots down and remove the loewer parts such as chipped paint.
So yes you can weeken a blank if you sand to much, but that would reqier a hell of a lot of sanding with 400 wet and dry.
You should use a good quality paint such as 2 pack but this could be dangerous if your not set up to use it.
Automotive enamal paint is good enough, do let it sit in the sun to fully harden before binding though. If you go to an automotive paint place you can normally buy the small touch up cans of paint at a good price.
Find the colour you want and do the prep and spray away. Make sure you use light coats and let it sit for around 5 minutes between coats.
Keep your guides as big as practical, while many think there is a rule to setting guides out, there isnt.
Use size 10 guides in the tip section and if size 8 is all you have then use that.

What finish do manufacturers use on matt finished blanks.

    Re: Advice Required

I dont use matt fisnish on my blanks. My blanks are painted with a poly urathane which is pooered over the blank, not sprayed. Matt finish can be baught from any automotive paint place in 500ml cans or spray cans. You can always use a preval spray can which allows you to use any colour paint in a pressure pot. Ask the automotive place for it.
