    Heavy duty bottom bouncing blank.

    The situation:

8-15kg Red Emperor and rankin cod in 70m of heavily shark infested waters. Saltiga 6500 with PE8 (120lb).

Only way we could guarantee landing a fish was to pump and wind like a madman, allowing no drag to be taken (30kg of drag), or no stopping coming up at all. I am currently using a rod I built from a PE9 black hole blank.

My friend wants a 6ft blank capable of running the same reel under the same conditions, and I was thinking one of the following 2 blanks:

Calstar GF760XH, or Seeker Hercules GTS60XH. Looking to move away from the Japanese jigging style blank for this build.

What do all you building gurus think?

    Cheers,
    Ben

Strewth Ben you would be better off using a deck winch, cheaper too and easier on the arms!!

    Bah, no fun in that!

And not really in the spirit of the group we fish in. I got shouted down for suggesting an electric reel! Lol

    Cheers,

You know unless you already have the reel this style of fishing might be better suited to a rail rod. Put a Torsa on it and you might find it easier on the body. Maybe spiral wrap the rod to stabilise it.

Unfortunately, he owns a Protector, which is like an oversize rubber ducky, so it has no rails...

He already has a Torsa 30 on a Pe8 United Composites jig stick, but we find the big spinners are better to pull them up with their stability on the rod.

Although the Torsa did manage a 70kg Estuary cod from 80m on Saturday!

    Cheers,

I hear ya. That's why I have a Saltiga Expedition as well. I use a T curve 400 (you know you might be able to get a 500 for this?). I'm keen to see whether this spiral wrapping is as good as what they say in stabilising the torque wobble. I plan to build one this year to find out.

I've built on the Hercules 60H before and they are a faster action than the japanese parabolics, but might still have a bit too much give for 'skull dragging'. The calstar should be better suited, but it will be a bit heavier and cumbersome than the seeker.

Ive built two rods on the st croix blanks model 2SWC70HF one a standard over head and one with a spiral wrap rated for 100lb braid and ultra light can also be built up as a spinning outfit jump online and have a look if you want

Ben, i built a heavy duty bottom basher on a calstar 600H. 6 footer, HEAPS of grunt (50/80 pound braid), fast action (not parabolic), bit o tip to feel the bites, i can vouch its bloody strong rod, its had some serious redline abuse on deepwater reefies, sharks etc. I run a saltist 30 Lever drag on it (wish i had a torsa), the next one i build will be a spiral as i recon that will be a further improvement.

I know Garry Howard has some old stock of Calstars he wants to sell, would pay to give him a call. Let him know Stu sent you.
