Thread: Flathead on live bait

    Re: Flathead on live bait

The theory that soft plastics look like live bait give credit to the fact that live bait is best. And it's free if you can throw a cast net. I prefer poddy mullet and diver whiting. Light weights to let them swim, but on the bottom. I like to drift with them over edges of sand banks if possible, but depends on where you're at. Hang around the drains from about half tide to low.

Ah awesome caster masta - i might give that a try next time. I am landbased and have often tried flicking SP's around Hayes Inlet with not much success ( bit of a beginner). I might change tack and have a go with a livie drifted down in amongst the pylons- i reckon that should be more then even chances of a flattie or a solid bream

Bought me self one of those blue fish traps and it has caught me nothing. Set it the other day and watched it from behind some mangroves, the small bait fish were everywhere around it but would not go in. Half an hour and nothing. I went to the supermarket and bought a big orange juice container and cut an x in the top and folded the triangles in (saw this on a you tube clip) put some bread in and left while went flicking plastics. When I come back I could see a lot of movement inside it. 4 small bream and a puffer fish. Not what I was hoping for. Set it for another half hour and still could not catch a small fish to use for live bait. Will be getting a cast net but in the interim would still like to gather some livies with either a trap or using a bait jig which I have not yet used.

Can anyone offer any further advice on the traps, the fish are there, they are curious and everywhere except inside??

Also keen to give a bait jig a go but would not know where to head in North Brisbane/Bribie area.

    Cheers,

    Jason

jason dont bother with the traps. You could use a bait jig near pylons, pontoons and beacons. I used one last weekend under the redcliffe bridges in about 2mtr depth and caught loads of herring, and a few small tailor. They will also catch garfish, hardy heads, even small bream, and whitebait. I dont think you would get too many mullet on them.
I would think the pontoon at deep water bend would be ok to try one as it is so deep so you could try dropping down deep of near the surface.

    Cheers

September holidays just gone. All on livies. After the first couple of days I switch to lures to 'give them a fighting chance' ;)
The big girls are all released, actually they are mostly released once we have a couple of feeds up our sleeve.
