isnt a jew at 45cm called a soapie because thats how they taste, hmmm why would you want to lower the size limit?

Re: Sunfish Qld - Jewfish Size and Bag Limits ????

Raise the size here in NSW I reckon and cut back on bag limits.
And keep it the same up there!!

    Hijacking the thread again guys,sorry.

North beach is where I spent a fair amount of time when I was about 12 and we used to know an old couple with the surname Williams.
I used to go worming with them and helping out and my pay was a handfull of beachworms.
Anyway, Back then was the early to mid 1970's and I used to watch them get jew using handlines off the beach near the township near dusk and saw them catch many large jew around the 20 to 40lb mark on beachworms on handlines in the surf.
Every saturday morning I would walk around north beach until I came across someone cleaning a huge jew on their front lawn(as they did back then) with a hoe or small shovel. The stuff dreams are made of for a 12 year old keen fisho.

Matt, we used to get a lot of small schoolies around the rail bridge at Raleigh.

Maybe the advertising has worked and the jew are going to Queensland for a holiday, Send em back, the holidays over
And keep Carnster away from em

    OK here is my thoughts

    1. Agree with Youngy fish should be allowed to mature enough to spawn.
    2. Right on Lethal these small jew are Soapies and taste as such plus it is a waste of good worms to catch these small fish.
    3. Qld will reap the benefits of the 75cm limit and bag limit of 2 over the next couple of years with some very nice and eatable fish caught.

I have seen the pillage of small jew being caught in Northern NSW over the last year and it is a real shame.
I see many posts of people desparately trying to catch Jew and whilst a 45 cm Jew is still a Jew , I am certain all those people would like to catch something bigger, I am sure WITH THE RAISED SIZE AND BAG LIMIT THEY WILL IN THE FUTURE.

Anyway I'm off fishing for a week. Happy easter everyone.

In my defense i have only kept 2 this year and they were from QLD and were legal.

If you read in the Jan 12 Newsletter the Rec Fishing Advisory Committte of 26 Sep 11
has advised lowering the size from 75 cm to 45 cm and keeping the bag limit at 2.
Whether or not this will happen who knows but interesting to hear what everyone thinks.

    Why bother?

Are they not called "Soapies" because of their poor eating quality at that size?

It appears akin to keeping a 23 cm squire.

No matter the size limits I have my own:

    70+ for Mulloway
    50+ for Flathead
Prefer a 30 cm Bream if I am going to keep one (Best eating I think)
Tailor - has to be over 50 cm or not worth the effort IMO.

I just have a few rules of thumb of my own and will release a bigger fish depending if I am fishing for a feed or not.

I don't catch that many anyway...

I am also under no delusion that all released fish survive and go back to joyfully swimming in the ocean.

It is common knowledge that Mulloway do not release well and they are prone to exhaustion, trauma, similar to Threadfin, another fish that does not release well.

    cheers

I have my doubts on how much is really known about the breeding lives of our fish. One case in point was an expert saying that lizzies won't breed over 90cm or somewhere round that. A little after hearing that a mate pulled one in that was way over a metre (I was there) & she was full of roe. We know because, sad to say with such a magnificent fish, she'd gilled herself from inside out on the ganged hooks. Mmmm just raised a thought. Can a fish survive on one set of gills?

    Just rattling your bucket Carnster

I caught an 18kg jew down here a few years back that had most of its Left side gill cover bitten off and about 60% of its left gill missing. Looked like it had a run in with a bitey in its youth and it seemed healthy enough.
Personally I would rather catch one half decent jew than 20 small schoolies and regardless of which state of Australia you catch it in I reckon they should be allowed to get to breeding age before they are allowed to be kept.
Unfortunately if fishos havnt experienced the rush of catching a big jew and only get littluns they will not know any better and think that jew dont grow much bigger than Bully mullet and never realise the potential of this magnificent fish.
    Cheers, steve.

In qld 2 fish bag limit is till quiet a bit. 1 person 2 mulloway, 4 people 8 mulloway and so on. I think that one mulloway per person per outing. 75cm is a good length though. One thing they are missing is they should have a maximum size. Qld regulations in NSW is the way to go!!!. People are already starting to notice the difference with the increased size limits in qld i know i am.
