I just picked up a new stradic 6000FI last thursday for exactly the same purposes. Filled it with 300yrds of 20lb finns and blooded it on a 85cm grey mack on friday. Very happy with it. My only critisism is the winding handle seems juuuust a bit to big (ie - the whole handle - not the knob at the end). I was just about to start a new thread seeing if it was possible to swap with the handle from a [for example] 4 or 5000 stradic.
Itls only a small complaint - and to be honest maybe I should just use it a bit to get used to it. I've had a 1000 stradic (spooled with 4lb finns) for about 6yrs now and couldnt be happier with it. Obviously it's not used offshore very much (although it has spun up the odd bonito and mack-tuna just for fun)
The Saragosa 10000 is only 9 grams heavier than the 8000, but has much greater line capacity, a higher max drag, and an aluminium rotor (the 8000's is graphite, as is the Stradic's). The Saragosa would be my choice, out of the reels you mentioned. The Saltist 6500 is a large, heavy reel compared to the other two - it's heavier than a Saragosa 18000 (which would be a better choice, in my opinion, if you want a reel that big).

Brent - I'm pretty sure (tho not positive) that it's the FJ series stradics have the graphite spools. And they only go up to 4 or 5000 size. The spool on my 6000FI is definitely aluminium.
I was referring to the rotors, not the spools. All the reels mentioned have aluminium spools.

any of those reels would fine imo. The gosa or even a sustain would be my pick. However if budget is a bit tight you could go a spheros 8000 or 10000. its a little lighter than the saragosa, same capacity and more drag. saragosa is a better reel though with better components. I have a spheros 14000 and it has caught some nice fish at a considerable difference in price compared to the gosa.Originally Posted by halcoholic
Seems like the Shimano Australia site might be wrong. On the Shimano North America site, the max drag figures for the Spheros and the Saragosa are the same in all sizes, except that there is no Spheros 10000 listed for some reason, though you can buy them from US tackle sites, like Tackledirect. On the Shimano Australia site they have the Spheros 8000 listed as having only 8kg of drag - on the US site it's 12kg.
Si, does your Spheros have woven carbon fibre drag washers? The Saragosa does now (early models had the solid carbon washers), but I remember that a lot of jig fishermen were upgrading the Spheros's drag washers with carbontex washers (about $15 overseas) and some were also replacing the bushing on the right side of the drive gear with a bearing ($10). The woven carbon fibre washers that Shimano uses in some of their spinning reels now is very similar to carbontex. Anyway, from what I've read, the 14000 and 18000 Spheros has accounted for a lot of kingfish, amberjacks, and big samsonfish (in WA) over the years.

well thats a bit strange. the website in australia indicates the spheros as having more drag than the gosa which surprised me also. My spheros 14000FA has standard drag washers. Its the model before the current one i believe. They are really well priced for what the reel can do in my opinion. mine has accounted for a few kingies, amberjacks, a few too many sharks, red throats and coral trout and hasnt missed a beat. i have serviced it a couple of times though.

Im waiting on my new Ryobi ap power 8000 spinning reel. Looks like the new saltiga ,all alloy and stainless fancy handle and only $125 delivered.10kgs of drag black and silver.If its anything like the metalroyal it will be bullitproof.

It should be interesting after reading that.I didn't know they had sold out to the chinese ,sounds like our government selling out to coal seem gas .If everyone knew the enviromental damage it creates we would shoot anyone considering it.It creates vaste quantitys of salt in the ponds they use turning the land into a virtual useless salt mine that used to grow our crops.Their enviromental controls are self regulartory what CRAP!!
Back to fishing i think i will take my stellas as well as this reel as its not looking good.
Love my new right hand wind zeebaas though, my new toy.

Your Ryobi AP Power 8000 does not look like the same 'series' reel as the Ryobi AP Power XL 20000 / Ryobi Carnelian that features in Alan Hawk's review, so there's still hope!
Actually, the Ryobi AP Power 8000 shares the same aluminium rotor and body as the Ryobi Applause / Penn Applause (the Ryobi Applause was marketed as the Penn Applause in Australia, same as the Ryobi / Penn Affinity). The AP 8000 has 2 more bearings than the Applause and a different spool and handle knob, but I'm guessing that the internals are the same, since they're only a little bit more expensive than the Ryobi Applause.
Maybe you know someone who has a Penn Applause, or someone on Ausfish who owns one could comment. I searched on here and found that Reggy bought one back in 2005, but had problems with a jerky drag. Drag washers may be different now or upgrade to carbontex ($15-20)?
I bought one online for a mate a few years back (a Ryobi Applause 8000), and I was impressed at how smooth it was and how I managed to get 10kg of smooth drag when testing with scales, just as advertised. Unfortunately, I don't think the reel has been used very heavily since then, so I can't really comment on it's reliability. Seemed good for $100.

I have recently have bought the okuma cedros cj80s. Spooled up with 40lb super pe braid. Been prob one the best all round offshore reels I have ever used. Very smooth wind and 450m line capacity.
Also have a look at the Penn 760 live linner.
