If you are bottom bashing in deep water I would be looking at a Spheros or Saragosa rather than theStradic. The Saltist is a good reel but its gearing is more suited to spinning etc. I have not used a Salina so cant comment

How about trying to track down a Daiwa Catalina?........apparently there is a new model coming out so you should be able to find an older model 6500 at a good price somewhere......

The saltist drag has been known to spike when heavily loaded at times and I've also had the bail roller seized quite bad up after washing and lubricating after every trip. And it's quite a heavy reel. You can't go wrong with the higher end heavy duty Shimano reels.

I bought a shimano talica 12ii to predominantly fish the bottom last year, I was so impressed I bought the smaller one as well 10ii

These reels have tiagra drags in them and have been made with braid in mind as the line. these things are really good to use ALL DAY LONG, match it with a good graphite rod and you have a combo which will be easy to sit and hang onto all day. they have some impressive specs too.... well worth a look

What do you call deep water and how often. I have both a 6500 and a Stradic 8000. The Saltist is a pig to bottom bash with but is not designed for that. The Stradic is ok for occasional use but not a regular heavy duty bottom bashing rig.

If by bottom bashing your talking 80m plus you need to think about the fact that if there's a bit to a bit more than a bit of current running you will be winding 12 to 24oz snapper leads up and down all day long. In spin reels i recon this limis you to the higher end models, stuff thats directed at the vertical jigging market (if you want it to last). In my mind there is heaps more options if you go overhead.
