I have a relative with a disability and a winch is al he is able to use. I have purchased a alvey winch and now need to spool it with line. In depths of up to 80m should I use low stretch mono or thicker braid ( or will braid slice the fingers when striking).

80 lb mono should be heaps , braid is a definite no no . I have owned a couple of winches and still use a boat rod with a 925c winch with 80lb braid .
I had 200lb braid on the alvey winch for a while. It was OK to hold onto, but because of the flexibility of it, it was always getting twisted and caught around everything as soon as you let it go loose at any time.
This was common between 'hand lining' to catch the fish and transition to winding the winch, really got annoying and dropped a lot of fish.
I changed to 200lb mono purchased on a huge spool on fleabay.
Works much much better than braid.
Friend with a really crook left hand uses it because he cannot hold onto a rod, same deal.
We had Alvey Reefmasters with some kind of braid on them. I remember it was Japanese, had a black/brown outer sheath and a white inner core. Was about 1 -1.5mm thick and easy on the hands. The line on them has lasted 20 plus years.
150lb-200lb mono is what i've used when i've fished with the deck winches - with much lighter terminal rigs - e.g. 80lb paternoster rig or whatever you would normally use for your target species.
