Thread: My first bream on a zman but it let me go.

My first bream on a zman but it let me go.

I got to the rock wall at 6am and realized I had forgotten just how low the tide can be around the full moon and how un fish-able the wall is at low tide. So I wandered along the wall thinking that in a few more years and floods the wall won't be fish-able as most of it will be gone.

Waited for the tide to come in and flicked a zman shrimp for hours with only a few taps. I tried a gulp shrimp which was just slimy and really had no action compared to the zman. Looking through my plastics wallet I looked at some grubs that I had only cut the top of the packet off of and there was juice all through the sleeve. No more gulps for me I have decided.

Also I had given up on fishing and started to walk the wall back to the car having a few flicks and wondering why the bream would follow the lure ( 4 or 5 small ones ) but not chomp it.

Had another cast and just at the bottom of the wall Bang ZZZzzzzzz I am on to a fish and my drag is to loose and I see it's a huge bream and after a few runs I lost the fish and nearly my temper

I think when it gets colder I may target bream on lures because it was pretty fun for the 60 seconds of hookup.

I used to catch a lot of Bream as by-catch on 1/4 oz jig-head with 4 inch minnows, surprisingly they never had any qualms in smashing the plastic.
I have not caught one like that in a while

As for surface and small hard body lures.

I found a little spot in the Brisbane river I could catch bream on Atomic Hardz and Bevy surface pencils.
I have not been down there in a while as there was only a very small window of opportunity to do this within the right times and tide flows, and only a very small stretch of bank to fish with industry either side.

One thing though that I did experience was the way they would smash a Hard Body lure and to tell the truth I got hit hard more than once losing the lure in seconds, leaving me blinking and wondering what just happened..
This was often in 2 or 3 foot of water!

Surprised me and I thought there might be a few jacks around, though realistically I suspect a large bream was the culprit.

    cheers

Heya chop i also been having a hard time tryin to target these fish, i too get hit on occasion but can't land them of yet, maybe my technique need a little improving i either tighten the drag to much or pull on it to quick, either way i think we both need to be patient, i been using 1/4 oz jigheads and 4" minnows or paddlers sometomes i been trying with zman's 4" grubs they hit on alot but i'm still not getting them in..hmm not sure what i'm doing wrong but i know its got to be something stupid...i'm sure i will findout what it is and fix it.

    Cheers

    Hey Billy,

I am no expert (especially on the bream mate) but you may be fishing too big. Go to a 1/16th OZ or even 1/8th jighead and a smaller SP like Gulp 2inch shrimp or (as I have recently learnt ;p a 65mm squidgy in bloodworm). Of course this is if you are targeting bream.

    Chop,

That'll teach ya. Stay on your toes and be ready for a strike whenever your line is in the water

Yes BillyT, they will hit a large plastic but mostly you can't pick this.
Better off going lighter, early mornings close to top of tide used to do it for me.
Small hard body lures rolled lightly/slowly might also be an option over rocky areas you think they might be hanging.

And if you see any surface hits have some small poppers (River to sea) or pencils (walk the dog) on hand.
    cheers
