For the guys using the crimped sleeves, how are you crimping them?
Saw some today on some pre-made rigs, and it looked like they were flattened neatly, definitely not done using a typical crimping or swaging tool. I had assumed I would use a crimping tool?
Scott.
I have been using the simple figure 8 loop knot for all my paternoster rigs for reef fishing. Has anyone experienced failure with this? I have been using this for many years and never had a failure at the knot. I use it on 60 lb fluoro carbon leader and plain mono as well.
It is so easy to tie and re rig as well. Three ties to a swivel is a lot of tying in my world.

A mate used 3-way swivels for years, now he ties a twisted dropper and much prefers it, makes life so much quicker.
I've been experimenting with a J-knot lately as the dropper knot after twisting the leader, it's fast to tie and the hook site out nicely from the mainline, just need to find someone to test the strength for me out of curiosity.
almost any dropper knot is substantially weaker than the main line, I avoid them at all costs, and that includes fishing for simple "small" fish like Flathead. 3 way swivels (the ones that have a right angled third ring) are next to useless, the only ones that have any stregth are the ones that are more or less a standard swivel, but have a second swivel located under the ring on the first one (if you get what I mean) for a single hook paternoster/dropper setup, I just use a standard swivel, the main line is tied to the top, and the sinker "trace" and hook trace are tied to the bottom end, this allows the swivel to still 'swivel" to avoid mainline twist , is as strong as your hook knot, and allows any part to be replaced on it's own, does not tangle up (even though you think it would) not saying any other method does not work, but fishing is a personal confidence thing, I feel confident with that setup, being as strong as I can possibly make it, so thats what I use!
I guess I should add too, a paternoster setup (in my opinion) needs the sinker trace to be a lot longer than the hook trace, I see lots with almost equal length, meaning when fishing, the bait and sinker are together (almost) a decent "smart" fish will be wary of a KG of lead donging into his/her meal! perhaps some people may in certain areas need the hook longer than the sinker??? dont know about that.
Have used a simple paternoser rig for years on the reef without any problems. I use a swivel to tie the paternoster rig to the mainline but the rig itself will have 1-3 loops in it (always good to have more than one so shark bite offs leaves a spare loop and you can run more than 1 hook).
I don't use any special tying technique - one I thought of myself which is probably the way most do it - see my crappy drawing - so simple and quick to do. Never breaks, always stands out from the main line. I usually use Jinkai leader 60, 80 or 100lb.

so, do you tie the hook on, or just loop it through the eye? Oh, and give that knot a test on a set of scales and see what it breaks at! 60-100Lb makes a good old snap when it goes, so perhaps try the same knot on some lighter line, test the line too first off.
The old dropper loop is very populat and a lot of guys swear by it but I have lost a couple of GOOD fish using them so prefer to use either a crimp or 3 way swivel if in tiger country. I must be doing somethig wrong with the knot as I only get about 50% of the line class out of them

i use 100 lb Jinkai plus with paternoster and we don t have much trouble at all ............... if we are pulling 10 foot sharks off the bottom they are handling it quite well tie the loop in a three time granny's not or over under knot 3 times

There is a fine line between fishing and just standing on the shore like an idiot
I wonder how much deeper the ocean would be without sponges

Sharks and spaniards are the only fish that bit through the loop and that's to be expected with any rig. I also slide on a very small length of 3mm green fluro tube which not only attracts fish (if I drop a two loop rig the one with fluro ALWAYS gets taken first) but also holds the loop away from the main line.
Never had the loop itself fail - I use plenty of saliva on the knot before pulling it tight.
