GPS points Caloundra 9 mile and 12 mile

I have not fished the 9 mile or 12 mile before but have got a few GPS points from the various fishing books around for the area.

My question is are the points from the books good enough to get me into the area to find a fishing spot of my own or are they a fair way out of whack?

Reason I ask is that I had some points a while back for Hutchies reef and spent half the day driving around in circles trying to find a spot only to find out the points in the book were out by nearly 1km grrr

If anyone has some points they could PM me that will get me in the area I would appreciate it

I've never been out to any reefs, but I think the best and easiest solution is to use a GPS with tracking ability. If you don't have one, fine.. Chances are you have a smart phone. Hopefully Android or Iphone and you can buy Navionics software on those which will give you gps tracking so you can see where you have been, and when you find structure, save points in it yourself. You can always go into it later and get the GPS Coordinates from it to put in a notebook etc.



Navionics is around $15 for either Android or Apple.

Yeah I have the GPS with the Navionics mapping card etc... I can trace my steps and save points etc but that is all well and good if you are in the right area.. like the original post said I am not all that keen to wander all over the place for half the day searching for something that isn't there only to find that I was supposed to widen my horizon by 1km to even find the reef..

I guess by the lack of responses for some more accurate points that I will be keeping my eyes open for other boats in the area and following them around until I get some points to reference

Get the Sunmap chart and work out your own Lats and Longs from it.

Does the Sunmap show the reef structure .. I will plead ignorant and say I have never seen one.. I have the Navionics chart card in my GPS.. would they have the same detail with the contour lines at all? I can see Murphy's on the Navionics but really have little knowledge of the reefs out from Caloundra.

Any of the white raised areas on the sunmap are reefs - start at the edges and sound around.

The Sunmaps show all the raised areas as white areas and big high spots/bommies as orange soundings. The common names of reefs are marked on the chart and also line ups. In some ways the paper charts are better than Navonics and in other ways they are not as detailed. It all adds to the big picture. Running a C-Map plotter beside a Navonics plotter or Blue Card all ads to your knowledge of a reef. Some of the common reefs, ie. Murphys etc. are show on the Navonics chip but a lot aren't. Also the Caloundra reefs you are talking about in many instances are only 2m higher than the area around it so they don't show up if you are working with 5m or 10m contours. The best bet is scanning it into Oziexplorer or a program like that and seeing where all your marks are on the chart. That way you will know if they are right or not.

It is a good thing I have seen a heap of American college movies or I would have had absolutely no idea what you were on about

I grew up on Sunnyside Road at the bottom of the hill so basically lived at De La but went to school at Redcliffe High

I am still a top bloke though hahahahahahahaha
