Thread: Building 23' catamaran. Build updates

Brendon: nothing more aggravating than losing a long post. I think you're right. I'm going to see if I can bring one from bias back to the boat for a fit check. How I got on to hat tangent was I was sick of filling pinholes and sanding. Got some really good feedback today from some guys interested in the design who visited at the request of the designer.

Thanks for to you and everyone for the support.

Re: Building 23' catamaran. Build updates

It seems I’ve been sanding for a month; I’m struggling a bit and I find myself doing all kinds of little jobs to stay motivated (and keep from sanding.) I sanded down the first coat of high-build and recoated the boat inside and out with two more coats of high-build. I’ve been working on sanding that— whenever I can’t find a good detour.

The door from Paul at Sailfish Marine came in so I took a couple of days to fit that. You can see from first picture that the designer made the top of the door sloped to match the slope of the roof. So I spec’d a rectangular door thinking I’d “fit” it when it got here Note also that I ran conduit along the roof/bulkhead join and faired that all in. Trouble was the doorway needed to be modified and the conduit interfered….. You can see the hack at the top of the door. I cut out the conduit and bogged the wires into the corner then I re-faired it all and you can't really tell. This gave me enough space to fit the door. Since the cockpit will be enclosed, I opted for a clear perspex door. I've got to figure out catches top and bottom to hold it open while underway.

The last picture is of some hinge work. With balsa cored build panels, the water will follow a screw down through the skin into the balsa and rot it out. So what has to happen is the screw holes have to be drilled out over size. Then the over-sized hole is filled with epoxy bog, then the screw hole is re-drilled in the centre of all that, leaving the screw bedded in epoxy not balsa. Lotta work to mount a hinge though.

One of my detours was to fit all the external hatches, anchor lockers, cockpit lockers, front opening window, and the door, then drill out and fill all the mounting holes. A few days work.

    Thanks Chimo, Dave_H.

Well I've finished sanding. That's highbuild primer sanded to 320 in the picture. I've decided to do the cutouts in the dash before I paint to avoid the possibility of scratching the new paint. Here's a picture of the layout I'm thinking about. The slanted surface of the dash is 240mm. The 1,2,3,4 are the rectangular digital guages that come with the Yammie. I could move the hydraulic pump for the steering down as far as possible which would give me room to mount a 7" combo above it, however, I have been thinking that I would put that on a bracket on the flat area above the dash, and go bigger. As you may recall, my wife gave me a 5" Garmin combo some time ago and I'm thinking of using that until I settle on the display. (Something tells me that a large common display shared by sounder, plotter, tv and internet is the way to go. Maybe having it concealed and lift up out of the dash???)

Other than that, I'm ready to start painting. Any other suggestions on the layout?

    Hi Steve

If you moved the wheel back and had it on the vertical you win all that flat area for sounder combo etc.

Maybe experiment with light on the face of the sounder etc, perhaps using a bracket so you can change the angle to defeat reflections / light / sun on it would make it that much more readable.

Also the Vhf in the proposed positon will be hard to read, channels etc. Can you place it so the face is angled for better viewing? Also the mike cord is likely to be a pain next to your leg in the proposed position too IMHO

    Cheers
    Chimo.

PS Off out the back to the pool to cool off after pruning and several tip runs...................

That's the story of my life! Q: You know when you're done sanding primer surfacer? A: When you say "enough is enough."

Last week we put on the first coat of topcoat (Alexseal Snow White Linear Polyurethane). It took 5 days to sand that back with most of the time spent on the bits that I painted. I just haven't been able to develop the knack for it so Phil with do all the painting from here out. After sanding back, a full day spent vacuuming the dust out of the boat and out of the shed, then two water-based wipe downs of the boat and a final wipe down of the surfaces to be painted with metho.

Today we put on the second coat. We painted the complete inside of the boat and the outside of both hulls. The pictures show the potential of the roll and tip method. These pictures are of new paint without any buff-out. We're going to do two coats on the inside of the boat and 3 on the exterior surfaces. The second coat on the exterior surfaces will get a light sanding with 320 grit paper - just enough to get good adhesion. (note: the outside cabin sides and the forward deck haven't yet had the second coat applied)

    Looking pretty good Steve!

Q: Are those 'curved step' looking things to the left of the helm, err, "curved steps"...? If so I assume the centre w/screen panel opens out to provide access to the foredeck??? Seen this concept on a nice GW.

Otherwise, as a certain red-head would say, "please explain" ?
    Cheers

    Hey Brendon,
Have a closer look. The plan is for a multi - level cocktail cabinet within easy reach of the sunbathing deck.
The front door opens/closes to keep in the air con.
Please do a bit research mate.

Looking awesome Steve! Really great job sanding the curved steps, I'm amazed at how glassy smooth they look. If you ever have time it would be neat to have a short video walk through of it from end to end.

Yes, you're correct. There is an opening window 600X900 (compliments of sailfish marine windows) at the top of the steps that accesses the foward deck area. I'll be putting dek tred on the foot falls of the steps.

    FatBuoy,
I think you would appreciate this. I have been looking for a spot on the boat to which I can transfer my "urban oasis" concept

    Steve,
I take my hat off to you. I cannot believe how talented some people are. I couldn't even contemplate taking on a project like you have.

Mind you, this is coming from a man who struggles working out which way to turn a tap!!

Like Wes said, any chance of a guided video tour??

    Tony
