First time buying Rods, Reels and lures

Hi,

I have bought myself a boat and am going to get myself all that i need for some fishing in the moreton bay area and surrounding rivers.

I love fishing but i honestly know nothing about it. I was hoping someone could please give me some advice regarding rods, reels and lures that would be helpful in the moreton bay area.

Does the brand and quality of the rod and reel make any difference at all to catching more fish? Does the quality of line make any difference to catching more fish?

I have also seen before people putting the round cylinders into the sand to try and get bait. What is this item and what sort of bait are they getting?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Spend a few days or so reading posts and then decide what you want to fish for. That will make trhe tackle choice a lot easier. What sort of boat do you have?

I have a 4.7metre half cabin with 70hp evinrude motor.

I dont even know what sort of fish are in the moreton area. I guess i need to do a bit more research.

Still would like some info about rods and reels though as i have no idea about the difference between a $20 rod and reel or a $200 rod and reel.

As I said, the information is all here. Do a bit of a search and read some of the posts in the tackle section. Work out some target species and a rough budget. There are usually some pretty good value combos on special that would get you started but the more info you can give us then the better the advice. A great combo for chasing Mackeral would really suck if you are chasing Whiting

My advice is buy decent lures. It's better to have 6 good ones than a heap of rubbish. I went fishing with a bloke from work who couldn't catch a fish on a lure. We caught a heap of bream and he nailed an 80cm flatty. I had a pile of cheap rubbish he had bought from Ebay without any idea. He now has a starting point and has stopped buying the Chinese specials. As the saying goes" all the gear and no idea"

There is a big difference in a reel for $50 compared to a reel for $150 where as the difference between a $150 reel and a $300 reel is minimal IMO.I use reels from $100 to $600 for various forms of fishing and I have fished the flathead classic with a $30 clearance special reel and $15 graphite rod as a joke and still caught fish on it whilst also using expensive combo's.It depends on your budget but a good bay oufit that will last I would spend $80 to $150 on a 2500 size reel and $70 to $110 on a 7ft 2-4kg graphite rod.Load this with 10lb braid and fish the creeks for flatties or chase tuna in the bay.If you go to 4000 size reel and heavier rod it will not be as versatile.Once you build up a rod/reel collection as most of us do then you start getting more specific gear for different forms of fishing.This can be dangerous for the back pocket !!! When purchasing a reel it is good if it has 2 spools included so you can run 2 different line classes.6lb and 12 lb are a good start.You don't need to spend a fortune.Fish light and the results will come your way.Good luck !

wow .... you are a true newby welcome to fishing!

how keen are you is the question ? - do you want to just chuck a line off the back of the boat and if you catch a fish it's a bonus (there are a hell of a lot of boaties like that ... and that's cool) ..... you can do that with a $5 hand line and a pkt of prawns
If you really want to learn how to fish ...... then hook up with a willing mate who knows how to fish! and / or join a social fishing club ( keep reading here too

as "horse" said read ......... work out want you want to do ! - my suggestion is always start with the bread and butter fish ( bream , flathead , whiting etc) = you dont have to spend a lot to start here & your boat suits it.

then put up another thread in maybe 6 months time ......... ask the question again

They are called Yabby Pumps. Almost every tackle shop will have one. I find Alvey pumps best. Now finding the Yabby beds and effectively pumping Yabbies is a whole different matter. Try searching youtube for instructions on Yabby pumping, fishing etc. A lot of good info. I spent 12 months in USA and for half that time I was snowed in so spent a great deal of time reading this forum on how to fish. It has paid off in spades so as per others advice on here..... research, research and research! Good luck Wade!

Concentrate on the estuarine species while you learn some skills and get used to your boat and sounder. Buy your self a quality rod 1-3 kg rod and a quality 1000 sized reel eg Stradic approx $199.00 and 2-6lb braid or a quality 2-4 kg rod with a quality 2500 sized reel eg Stradic approx $220.00 with 4-8lb braid. This combo will cost $350-$400 but if looked after eg. no sand ,no salt water will last 15 to 20 years and will form the start of your collection. Both combos will be perfect for trowing lures and bait and the smooth drag and sensitive rod will see you land very large fish. Buy a yabby pump and cast net and learn to us them as live bait will be much better than a servo prawn. Drift your boat with a lightly or unweighted live bait while watching the bottom structure on your sounder, take note of the tides and you will work out how the rivers work and what spots are productive. Then move on to lures. Every time you go fishing another thing is lernt and added to the big picture.you never stop learning.
