2012 is Kalumburu for this player,,,, we had March/April penned in but due to the 2011/2012 wet season the roads are still not passable (been this way since 2010),,,

June is now the month marked on the calendar,,,,, fly to Darwin,,, and either Uni Mog hire,,,, or if the roads are still stuffed we fly in,,, but the option of flying in is a last resort option only,,,, hence why the expense of taking a Mog on a road trip for 4 weeks,,,,,

    can it get any better??????????????,,,,,,,,,,,,,,http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgG_TxEPaQE

    G'day

Me? Already circumnavigated Moreton again this year in the 14' boat... bloody sensational.

Last year I fished in the Amazon, caught Amazonian Salmon, Cod and Piranha.

This year I will be traditional style fishing the San Blas Islands, off Panama in the Carribean. And hopefully learning to fish for salmon in Canada. Will also try the locals style of fishing in Colombia.

Wow, that's variety! You are obviously a man who thinks outside the box.
Has anyone done any mothership trips? I.e a big boat to sleep on and smaller boats to fish out of. I reckon this has a lot going for it. All the amenities on the big boat and a practical boat to catch fish from. I read an old post on here once about guys considering taking their own boat on a Swains (charter) trip. I don't think they went ahead with it, but how good would it be to have your own rig 100 odd miles offshore, with the security and comforts of home anchored up a few minutes away?

We take our 56' Motor sailer to the Bunker group but the Swains is another whole equation. Getting fishing boats out there would be a big issue along with fuel and water. Let me think on it......

My wife and I are towing our 26ft Scarab behind the Jeep Grand herokee 2.7lt diesel up as far as Lucinda for a 6 week round trip from the Caboolture area, (for our 25th anniversery) planning on going around Sept. Have been working on doing this boat up for the last 8-9 months and almost ready to put it in the water to work out any problems that I haven't forseen, will allow about 4-5 days to get there, and then starting by going out to Orpheus island, maybe Palm Island and then out to the closest reefs out near there.

Then heading down south towards the Whitsundays for the majority of the trip, doing the tourist thing, fishing, snorkeling, bumming around on the beaches, plan on going from Armit island down to the Cumberlands and most of the Islands in the Whitsundays and possibly out to the reefs closest to Hayman. Heading further South will do Lady Musgrave and the Kepples before heading home.

The boat will have a 2.3mt inflatable, 30lt water tank plus additional water in the 120lt esky, about 320lt fuel at a minimum and possibly some spare side fuel tanks containing another 50-80lt. Have to check the fuel useage of this boat as I haven't had it in the water yet and it will be a heavy drinker with an 496 Merc Mag HO driving a Bravo 3 duo prop. I have just posted on another post describing the stuff I have done to it and still need to do to it in case anyone is interested. Planning on going out for 4-5 days at a time before refuelling and restocking, this will give us ample time to visit most of the areas we want before moving again to visit other Islands in the group.

Taking probably more rods than I need from the Daiwa SLT 50 down to light baitcasters, better to have more and not need them than need them and not have them, at least that's what I keep telling the missus! I rarely eat fish as I had ciguatera poisoning 12 years ago, but at least I can play with them.

At least it will be a good trip, wouldn't mind doing the next trip after that in May next year, would like to go down to Bermagui/Narooma/Montegue Island assuming all goes well with this trip.

    Cheers Ed.

    Im going to COWTOWN

    Puerto Vallarta (Punta Mita), Mexico

Insane fishing, massive tuna, big black marlin, decent prices and the missus loves it. I go fishing every second day and she just shops and drinks great big frozen margaritas. Oh i can taste the fish tacos and ceviche now.

Still deciding if we hit up the carribean (Virgin Islands) as well or road trip it from LA to Canada , or Kona for some heavy tackle blues.

Sneaky trip to Vanuatu is on the cards as well. The missus has to go away for work (she has no idea that after i drop here at the airport i will hop on a plane myself)

Theres 2 trips i would like to do this year, Firstly i would like to do a trip out of clareview fishing the percy isle group any tips/advice for that way would be appreciated,Secondly we are taking the 6m maxi c/cab to airlie in sep/oct for a week staying at the whitsunday caravan park,we have hired a renta boat for the last couple of years, so have a little bit of an idea where to go, but by taking my own i should be able to do a fair bit of exploring on both the fishing and snorkeling dept (got to keep kids happy) so any tips for up that way would be greatly appreciated. So hopefully we should all be able to do these trips this year.

Ed and Bigjudge remember that September is right in the guts of the trade wind season in NQ. Better to wait for the start of the doldrums in November. You might get lucky and get a break in the weather in September or October but be prepared for big constant SEers for weeks on end.

Re: Dream exploratory trip(s) for 2012. please share :)

Thanks Smithy for that info, as you said Nov., would be preferable but unfortunately, that is the only time my wife can take time off work, I am retired so that isn't an issue for me. We will actually be leaving on the 17th Sept. and plan to arrive at Lucinda 5 days later, at around the 22nd. 4 days there and a day or two day to get back to the Whitsundays so we will arrive in the Whitsundays towards the very end of Sept. At least once we get to the Whitsundays there is always some protection from the winds, the reef trips may be an isue but we will take it as it comes.

If the seas are smooth then we can whip out there and back quickly, if not the mainland isn't too far anyway. I think that the boat can do about 55+knots/hour but at 30 to 40 knots cruising speed it should still only take about 30 minutes from the reef to Lucinda or 15 minutes to Orpheus, and double that if the seas turn a bit lumpy. We should be able to spot any bad weather before it arrives and be back safely before it gets too bad. At least that's the theory.

We spent our first honeymoon in the Whitsundays at that time of year and I think we only had one windy day out of the seven, but if it turns nasty or very windy we can just visit the reef areas on the other side of the islands or even just bum around at the resorts and be tourists. either way beats being at home.

    Cheers

    Ed.

Thanks bull, i know the water goes out a fair way at low tide was thinking of trying to go when high tide is from 4am/7am which should give me 3/4 days of fishing, was going to stay at caravan park, can i get fuel, ice etc there or should i try and rent a house, as i live in rocky its only 2hrs drive so i am keen to give it a go. Hopefully i can catch up with some of the locals or maybe yourself for some directional tips.

Perry, are you up for a run to the Swains. 170kms+ each way to the Herald Prong area. A few jerry cans should do the trick
