    Re: building a new boat

It depends on this rain at the moment kind_cir,once i can get a good weather window i can hook into it,the plan is to stich it up ,sheath the bottom flip it ,sheath the inside and flip it back all sealed it does not matter then, the ply is sealed and then ill finish the bottom.....strakes,fair and paint, and flip it then fit the inside, its all drawn up and the frames are part of the jig so you just have to cut out the inside of them and the stringers are the same ,part of the jig,so these bits will all be fitted in a day.

If you had a shed big enough to build it in you would be supprized how fast it is to put one together once you have drawn the plans and cut it out and the jig made,i expect it to take me about 2 to 3mths depending on work.

I am seriously considering building one of these rigs, and when you consider a plain as 4.4m pressed tinny will set you back around 5k and your doing a 4.8 open for around 2.5k which should handle the rough a lot smoother, then I'm sold.
I'll have to convince the Mrs it's a good idea, but i'm sure she'll come around. Is it realy that easy to build one of these? I have no wood experence, and no clue at all about glass ect. I do have pannel beating, spray painting, house painting, metal fab, car building, auto elect, and drinking experence, so I should be able to cut wood. And I guess a jig saw, sander, grinder and a 9x9m shed helps too.
I'm still not 100% sure,.. I have got a pretty full 12months ahead of me with house stuff to do after the extension to mull it over. Perhaps I can get in contact with you one day when I'm close to start and come for a short spin in your wooden weppon just so you can seal my fate down the wood boat building path.

Good luck with the build. Looking forward to the end result.

    Re: building a new boat

Yer that would be ok to take you for spin, this is my second build, you have all the skills with all you have done and doing on the house and probbly all the tools you dont need much, drill ,sander, file, jigsaw, you dont consider it a wooded boat, thats just the core or composite its bulit on, and you can build it to how you want it, not how you buy one,my other boat has a 120lt built in ice box, no eski on the deck and a 9foot rod bench and 3 rod boxes come storage,or if you just do normal fishing the builds just simple and faster.

Hi Chris, I was hoping to find threads on here about building a boat. I've just undertaken to build a 23' power catamaran. I'll be following your posts with interest.

    Re: building a new boat

Just doing the sums and think I should defentaly build a boat.

A pressed unpainted 4.2 tinny on trailer and 30hp merc on water will set you back at least $7500. To build the smaller edgetracker 426 @ 4.26m on the water like above would be aprox $7500. No difference untill you factor in that you get more boat for your money when you build. Storage, a flat deck, pedstal seats, rod racks, painted hull, and a smoother drier ride to boot IMO. If looking for some of these features in a pressed ally boat you would be up around 10K.

Can't wait to get all this home stuff out of the way, so I can get cracking.

Looks like the weather up here is starting to break chris, better get cracking before the next big wet.

    Re: building a new boat

I'm also building a boat from the same designer, a Sandy Strait. Basically a 14 ft stitch and glue "tinny"

I'll be following this build closely also..starting to get ideas...

Wonder if you could get all the parts CNC cut, similar to some of the plate kits?

Hi there Adam_G you would have to talk to the designer about that, its not hard to draw out and cut.

    Re: building a new boat

Well with all this rain havent been able to do much other than butt joining the sections together so i thought id show the process, first i belt sand the plywood down one ply so its level when glassed, were you butt join it will never break on that joint.

    pics from left to right

1 first i mix some cotten flox and epoxy and wet the ends of the ply and push them back together and wipe of what squeezes out,the ends of the ply can suck up the resin so you go back and do it again so its wet.

2 then i wet the ply on top to sock up into the ply.

3 then i place the glass over the wet ply to start wetting out from under the glass and wet out the top

4 then i place some peel ply ontop you can see it wetting out,the peelply socks up the excess epoxy and does 2 things,by takeing away the blush and leaves it keyed you can lamiate strait over it,other than sanding the edges

5 and finaly you can see that the peel ply has taken up the excess resin and allows you to squeegee out the air and push epoxy around to any dryer bit and remove any excess resin by pushing it out to the sides and ends you should beable to see the stiching on the glass showing through this means you have gotten a good resin to glass ratio, ill will leave the peel ply on until im ready to put the main sheath of glass over the hull, when you pull it off you pull it back over itself.

Hi there kind_cir is a release fabric that doesnt stick to epxoy ,vinelester or polyester, you can laminate strait over what you have done without sanding once removed and it takes away the impurities the rise to the surface of the epoxy that you would other wise sand off to put down another laminate, but if you have a look at this link theres many types for different processes.

Hi Adam - you can get the parts CNC cut but it costs a lot more just buying the wood pre cut. It's so easy to cut out that it's not worth the extra cost !
