Re: Custom Grips
Jeez Willo they are flash, would love to know how to do it myself. As far as putting a price on them like you said its hard with out knowing the time it takes but if I had a customer who wanted somthing like this I guess that I would quote somthing between $30-$40 each for them, I am probably way off the mark but thats my guess.

By the time you take into account the different colours of EVA and the wastage, then add the glue I'd say there's $20 minimum of components plus an 1-1.5 hours cutting, glueing & shaping
I'd be looking for $60-$90 a setCheers,

But can see where the money comes in ...it takes me from start to finish 4 -5 hrs to do a set, a lot of time get soaked up by the glueing up proccess.....As you say though there a lot of work ..the abstract ones anyway....and might shy away from them a bit unless someone percificaly wants them

Re: Custom Grips
I know how long custom grips take. Some of my checkerboard grips and the Indian blanket style take a heap of time and patience cutting and gluing, then shaping. I only do them now if a customer specifically wants them or for show rods. You have to charge accordingly for the time. If you spend 5-6 hours on the abstract ones I don't think $100 is unreasonable to ask.

Re: Custom Grips
It's an unfortunate reality that only a select few are prepared to pay the necessary $$ for true creative craftsmanship. I can compare it somewhat to my partner who is a professional graphic designer - she has creativity in bucketloads, but generally has to do the bare minimum to keep the price down and the customer happy. Hence, for her to show her creative side, she has to do it outside of work hours.
Rodbuilding for most of us is about passion, not profit. So for those creatives out there, please don't get too hung up about being adequately reimbursed for your work, because the world needs innovation (even though it's often not prepared to pay for it).

Re: Custom Grips
Willo,
I have a wood lathe I'm not using if you want to have a muck around.
I think most of the guys doing this are using a mitre saw with a blade sized the same width as the EVA sheets they're using.
I have one of those and a bandsaw.
You're welcome to drive up and cut a heap of bits.
I'm not far from Logan Hyperdome.Cheers,
Owen
