Had upped my leader to 15lbs after being smashed twice yesterday morning using 8lb. It is always a balance between light gear and landing capability.

Anyway, tide was at the bottom of the run out. I was flicking into the drop off and sure enough after about ten casts I was on! Nice little flattie, went 46cms. Nice eating size so into the keeper bag he went. Loaded up again, threw it out and I got hit hard. This thing was peeling off line. I am not sure what it was but it was jumping out of the water and putting on a real acrobatic display. I could be wrong but in the dim morning light it looked a bit like a salmon? Do you get salmon up the northern end of the Pumicestone passage? Perhaps a tailor? Back to the story, in between big runs and me battling to get back a bit of line it jumped about 6 times doing mickey flips and cartwheels, then put it's head down and headed south. Finally with my drag screaming it jumped once more and it threw the hook!!!! . Still great fun, once again as the sun was coming up, it was a beautiful spectacle.

So, re-rigged another Gulp Minnow Grub paddle tail chatruess????is that how you spell it??? (See in pic, got em in USA. Cant seem to get that style here in Caloundra. Anyone know where I might get them? Don't care what flavour just want 3inch. Flatties go mad for em). So off I went flicking my plastic. Cast out and didn't even touch the reel to retrieve and felt the telltale thud!!!! Counted to a million (ok, maybe 5 but geez you gotta hold yaself back dontchya??). Struck and ....yep.... nice bit of weight there. After a nice little dance in came a 57cm jobbie! Once again nice table size so into the bag he goes.

Kept throwing in but it shut down. Same story every morning I hit this spot. Bite window is 30 mins. I was back home filleting them by 6am!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed my rerun of previous posts of late!!!!

Please keep being a broken record!! We are loving the reports (as I said hoping to move up that way in 2013.

Great fishing by the sounds of it for you this morning. We think that your acrobatic fish may have been a tarpon...what do you think?

    Keep up the reports Funchy.

    Thanks
    Tim and Trace

well done again funchy. you are beginning to sound like a broken record too. have you considered trying zman plastics? they have 4" curl tailz in chartreusse and a few other colours. i know thats an inch longer than requested but they do catch flatties. also, the store "that cannot be mentioned on this site" sells gulps in that pattern although they would be called a curl tail rather than a paddle tail here. i would tend to agree with tim that you may have been onto a tarpon or a giant herring with those acrobatics.
    cheers

    Well done Funchy,

I used to have some good success at Caloundra when I had my estuary tinny.

Since getting the bigger glass boat I have not really seen much action...yet.

So much water out there and where/when to fish?? Tactics??? Such a re-learn!

Re the fish you got I'm betting along with the others that what you had was a Tarpon as I caught a good one the other week off Redcliffe and it performed in a similar manner. It did only jump out once but was really spectacular on that occassion. The first run was a blinder and it finished by circling down deep and it absolutely never gave up. Amazing fight for about a 1.5-2 kg fish!!

Could also have been a queenfish.. a few of them up around the northern end of the passage.

cheers T&T. Yep it is a great place to live. I commute to Brissy every day for work and people say I am crazy. I know people who comute 50 mins to live in the burbs and stare at their neighbour fence. The extra 10 mins is worth it when I get home and take my little ones to the beach. Oh, and did I mention the fishing?

    Re: Broken record?

    Thanks for that Davo.

Haven't tried the Z man placcies. (I have noticed you like them.) I will begin to expand on my placcy range as I get more experience using them but I really like using the Gulp. I have some on there way in the shipping container thats brining our gear home from the USA. "They" say you need to have confidence in the bait/lure you use. BTW, I ended up in a mart starting with K today and found the ones I am after (In pumpkin seed too which is my favourite!!!). $8 a pop.

Doesn't sound mad to us..that is what Tim'll be doing most likely (unless we win the lotto!) minus the little ones (ours are all grown up which is part of why we are able to move north soon )

    Hey Greg,

I go every Saturday and Sunday and more than happy for you to join me. PM me with a date that suits you and we'll work something out. I am landbased and like I say, the bite window is only 30mins or so ....... but hey, if we catch a couple we can do fresh flatty fillets on the BBQ for breakfast!.

FYI, just about to turn those flatties from this morning into fish bites shallow fried in egg and breadcrumbs with fresh salad..... mmmmmm.... might have a couple more beers first though!!

    Re: Broken record?

Sounds like a queenfish to me......plenty of big queenies all through the passage, especially towards the caloundra end..

    Re: Broken record?

nice report mate..my guess would be a tarpon for sure.. i know at the moment there are some massive schools of them around the goldy at the moment.. super hard to catch though as they are feeding on the billions of tiny jelly prawns that are around... they peel line like no tommorrow as well
dont knock on deaths door... ring the doorbell and run... death hates that!!
