How to use a sand spear?

Any tips on how to use a sand spear. More about where to place it, than how to connect it up.
Where is the most reliable place to get water -
Behind the dunes?
Near the tree line?

You need to dig down a foot and see if there is any water welling up if so put the spear down .
the lower the ground the better.
do a search on this forum for sand spears little bit of info there somewhere

Be mindful of where ppl go to the latrine, sand spears do not discriminate between clean and sewerage water.
I have a feeling they are not allowed to be used in national parks for this reason.

behind a dune is usually the best spot around grass line... i'd dig a little more than a foot, try 2 foot for decent water but try and use some filters.
