VHF or 27meg ????

Hi all, i'm looking at getting a epirb and a radio for the new boat. I know tat VHF is more widely used these days but i just want something to log on/off with Bribie VMR when heading out fishing. My boat is not big so will only be going from Bribie to Moreton island. I wont be heading out any much further than that so will a 27meg suffice ? The problem with the VHF is that i don't have a cert. and probably wont be able to get one for a while which means I'm technically unable to operate anyway.

VHF is alot clearer and if you need to use the radio I'd rather the best...as for a cert, nice to have and I'm sure someone will tell me know I have to have one, but I've had VHF in many many different boats and am yet to find time to do my cert..(I know I should)

I don't know what motor you have but if it is exec a 27meg won't work when the motor is running. I have both but only for talking to mates while fishing. Hope this post helps. Cheers

vhf for sure....do the course asap, so your across how to "correctly" use it....if you get in strife, and you need to use it without a cert, very doubtful you'll get stung for illegal use

By law if you are in an emergancy situation you are legally allowed to use any form of communication available to you.

hey buddy,,,, i got a VHF in the boat awhile back,,, lot better and clearer as stated above by others opposed to the old 27 meg radios,,, and i believe,,, (not sure) that soon VMR will stop monitoring 27 meg anyway if they haven't already,,,

go and check out the chanderlery at Spinnaker,,,Mrs Choppa bought my Navman 7100 there for about $80 cheaper than anywhere else i looked,,, but she got it at the same time as the Fishplotter/GPS unit and other stuff so it was all part of a package deal,,,

and as a last note,,, the amount of "licenced" operators on the water versus the amount of "unlicenced" versus the amount of "fines" imposed on those that are not licenced???,,,,,, you can always sit for your certificate later,,,and have the peace of mind now
