Thread: Rod no. 3

    Rod no. 3

After seeing some brilliant work from the guys on this board I had a crack at a Dragon scale. It's not the best but I'm very happy with the outcome. I used 25 lb mono which was too thick in hindsight but I do like the fact this really stands out off the blank. A video in sunlight woudl really show off how it works. Just as well too as it took me forever.
Gotta love those Alps holographic guides too. They look great but also a built strong. I used a VX double foot stripper and SF singles for the rest. Thread was Pro wrap metallic.
I'm also a big fan of the dimpled winding checks.
This is another old rod redone but I'm getting close to building one from scratch now.

Good one DB, though I wouldn't know what a Dragon scale was if I tripped over one!!

Hey should be out there today/night. I'd be out but recovering from a minor operation. Pity, best looking reef weather for some time.

Ok you didn’t learn the first time and now you’re addicted. Nice work mate and just some constructive criticism. You have epoxy build up at the bottom of your guide feet. The trick is to apply the coating in thin layers, yes this takes a bit longer but the end result is a nicer more flowing look. I trick I use to do and some times still do is to coat but don’t coat beneath the guide feet until the last and final layer. This means the coating won’t build up beneath the guide feet. When we have another rod building weekend I aim to do more coating than just binding as we always do. With so much work that guys put in to the rods the coating is what makes the rod sing, screw that and all the work is for nothing, well almost.

Good point Stu I'll work on that. I was going to order in some Pro Cote from mud hole. Have you used it? I would like to use the Bullards but since I am about to place an order through mudhole was goign to try the pro cote instead.

Hey Steve I haven't fished for ages mate, too busy with the kids and this addiction!! My brother did go out on Friday night and smashed the Nannygai for a few hours before coming back in and nailing 5 Fingermark all around 6 kilos. He jsut rang to say he got 3 Barra from the Croydon dam. I hate him....
