    Basic GPS/sounder unit advice

Morning all, I have just acquired an older V16 Haines and need a basic GPS/sounder. Not an all singing & dancing type. Mainly for relatively close bay trips/river/estuary etc. Any advice would be helpful.

Ps I also have the original back to back seats if anyone is interested in acquiring same.

No replies yet...There are a few combo's in the classifieds here but once you add the map card the prices quoted for the Elite 5 from the Vic dealer aren't too bad.

You can get them for not much more than that from Singapore on ebay. Don't get a US lowrance GPS as they aren't compatable.

Mate have a look at a Garmin 551s......sounder combo chartplotter etc......it will come with very good in built charts ready to use and they are a pretty decent sounder aswell IMO.

Shop around and you can find em for $600 and upwards......hard to beat having the charts in built that will save you hundreds.

Thanks for that Dan. I got his from another site. A basic combo Garmin 451s (gps/sounder) with australia and NZ maps preloaded $664
its a 4inch screen, but super clear, easy to read, comes with tide information preloaded, simple navigation

or there is a 551s (gps/sounder) again with full australia and NZ mapping preloaded (so no cards) $806
5 inch screen and same functions as the 4 inch model.

I think you could do a little better than $806 for a 551s,,,,,,,i picked one up earlier this year for $635 from BCF online delivered thanks to Squidlet keeping an eye out.

Have a look at the Whitworths site.....the 451s is a little too small imo but if you have good eyesight go for it.

Have a look at the GME chart plotters and sounders on whitworths web site. Aussie made and the plotter and combo have free c-map charts.

Good pixells and 500 watts of power.

$849 for the combo (5.6 inch)includes the transducer with C-map card (usually $300+ for the C-Map card and $100+ for the transducer by themselves) and $699 for the chart plottter with C-map card also.

I'm looking for one to put in my new tinny therefore don't want to go too crazy. Like the look of the Garmin 551s , whitworths have it for $799 including Blue Chart G2 maps. Did like the Lowrance Mark 5 Elite but the Garmin comes in cheaper and has the bigger transducer. As for the Maps I like Navionics and Garmin Bluechart for good detail, but not so fussed on C-Map which is the only thing putting me off the GME - maybe the CMap charts I used have been older versions?

Go have a play with the GME......Its really slow to scroll accross the screen,it just appeared to be poor quality when i checked one out.

Good advice gents. It would be easy to just go out and buy whatever is handy but pricing varies so much as do features. Someone could easily get caught out with "that doesn't include the card" and end up well out of pocket.

I'm with Dan. I think you will find the 451 a little too small
